Is bowel prep only for those having bowel repair?

I have read some drs do the prep and others dont. I am not anticipating anything other than total hysterectomy with the removal of my ovaries vaginally.. hoping no bowel prep for me but dont have pre op till friday!

I'm having DVH/BSO and have the bowel prep. Def not looking forward to it. Had one for my colonoscopy and it's not a fun night. Pillow and blankey in the bathroom. I'm sure you will find out during your pre op appt

Had LAVH with everything taken on 1/28 and did have to do the bowel prep. It did help with the night I spent on hospital but didn't help with BM problems afterward but I never have been normal when it comes to BM's. Hope all goes well with surgery and recovery.

My doctor orders bowel prep for all of her TLH patients. Don't worry, it's not so bad.

I did not have to do a bowel prep before my TVH just nothing by mouth after midnight. It just seems to be doctors preference based on what he/she knows about your situation.

I'm having a TAH and was told I had to do the prep because I have had adhesions involving my bowels before. In fact I had to have a resection after a laparotomy years back because things were "glued" together. I lost a tube in that surgery.

I am doing my bowel prep on tuesday. I am worried about the 2 hour drive to the hospital the next morning over a dirt mountain pass. Thats the last thing I want to deal with.

I feel a little stupid asking, but, what is the purpose of bowel prep?

Purpose is to provide more room in the abdominal area for work. I see it's more common in Lapo. BUt it also allows your body to rest a little the few days after surgery. The first bowel movement is a HUGE psychological and physical effort. Egads.

Two, if for some reason they do snip a bowel, it helps prevent other major complications.

I have to do bowel prep on Thursday morning.

Hey, does anyone know of a trick to make Magnesium Citrate taste a little better aside from just guzzle it down as quickly as possible. Is it okay to add a bunch of Stevia to it cuz that stuff is so dang sour and nasty.
