What to do when your restricted hours aren't being honored?

Hey gals, so I've been back to work for a week. Things have been good. The last 2 days I've worked however, my boss has asked me to stay over on my shift. I am on restricted hours. From a HR perspective, I am wondering if he is even allowed to ask me to this this? It really does put undue pressure on me, sometimes I feel bad saying no. But, I get over it quick because it is important that I take care of me and continue to heal. I wish they respected the doctors order and my fml/std statement.

Re: What to do when your restricted hours aren't being honored?

Hey there, glad you had a better week. Short answer - no - i don't think your boss has the right to over ride the orders of your Dr. Good for you for sticking to your guns though......maybe he was just trying to push the boundaries, see how you react?

I hate having to tell people "no", too. But from your boss' perspective, he doesn't know how you're feeling or how tired you are. Maybe what he means when he asks you to work extra hours is really, "Do you feel well enough to work extra hours?"

Think of it as a learning experience in saying "no".

Re: What to do when your restricted hours aren't being honored?

Are you working with an. HR rep? I would consider talking to that person and ask how to handle such requests. If you have specific restrictions, and an HR dept to help you, you should be able to get the restrictions honored. If you don't want to go straight to HR, you might tell your boss you need to check with HR (or your Dr, or STD co, etc) as to when you can honor such requests, since you are currently restricted. That might put him into compliance plus serve him with a warning that you could go to H.R., which I doubt he wants. Good for you for saying no. I have had bosses try to get me to break restrictions, too, (different injury), and I know it did cause me a lot of guilt, but anger at their tactics, too. There is a lack of concern for your best interests in those requests, so hard as it is to decline, it's best to not give in. I hope the situation improves soon.

Re: What to do when your restricted hours aren't being honored?

I am surprised that your employer even let you go back to work on restricted hours. I am a preschool teacher. I had a tah/bso in June for endometrial cancer stage 1a grade1. My employer would not let me come back to work until my doctor said I could come back with out any restrictions (both physical and time wise) In a way that was better because I had more time to heal. Don't be afraid to remind your employer about your restricted hours and tell them if you don't feel physically up to working longer.
