28 days post hysterectomy: Bowel Pain
28 days post-op. My innards still betray me Constipation and every morning, like clockwork, excruciating gas pain that lasts less than a minute but takes my breath away. I tapered off taking laxatives because the bottle said not to exceed 7 days but now there's nothing going on. When will my bowels be normal again?!

Re: Bowel Pain
I hope you are recovery well and your bowels are working with you. I am having much effects since my surgery on 06/01. The biggest problem was my bowels and constipation. I was informed to make sure not to strain what so ever and suffering from constipation since forever before my surgery, this was my biggest fear. I have been taking colace 3xs a day with every meal has been a life saver and use it regularly and is non habit forming. It is just a stool softener. I am most concerned about pushing too hard and hurt my abdomen and internal healing. Herbal teas have also been helpful too in soothing the stomach from the pain meds. I wish you a very healthy, speedy and painless recovery. Staying hydrated is important and good for the bowels too. Good luck
Sincerely,
Christina

Re: Bowel Pain
((Leslie D)) I understand how you feel . . . I struggled with that after surgery, mainly due to all the repair work I had done. Stool softeners are very helpful. My doctor also had me take Mirilax. You already know the routine of drink lots, eat fiber rich foods, and walk Have you tried Smooth Tea . . . many ladies have had good luck with it. I also drink a hot cup of coffee first thing in the morning and then walk around. It helps to get things moving. My Pelvic Floor Therapist also recommended this recipe: 1 C Oatbran, 1 C applesauce, and 1/3 C prune juice. You start out with 1-2 T a day and increase it to 3-4 T. I no longer need to take the Mirilax which I took for 4 months per doctor's orders.
Remember we are here for you.

Re: Bowel Pain
I also suffered from constipation before often straining so hard I thought I would have a stroke. It took me 9 months to find a solution then had a colonoscopy, now I am fighting to get back there. I can't afford all the 'foods' I was taking before, so trying to make due with what I have. I tried miralax but it took 6 days to work the first time, then another 5 days after, plus I had horrible gas from it and after two weeks was getting dizzy which can be a side effect. I tried prune juice but it gave me horrible gas. I might try that recipe above if I can find a small can of prune juice. I tried milk of magnesium and it helped the best. I will take the 2 tablespoons as directed, then about a tablespoon every third day. Both my gyn and gastroenterologist said like that is fine especially at my age.
Right now I am taking metamucil, oatmeal with fresh ground flax seed, 1/2 cup high fiber beans, 2 stool softeners, walking and fluids.
My problem is not constipation like hard stools - just my bowels don't want to 'push'. If I miss a day, the next day I will have constipation right by the rectum - like little marbles. I have had to resort to digging them out until the soft stuffs starts moving.
