Megadosing C for surgery and recovery

Has anyone heard about taking megadoses of Vit C for recovery and healing after surgery? I read an article a few years ago and wish I would have paid more attention to it. Pre-op testing tomorrow and surgery July 14. Any info would help a lot.

Megadosing C for surgery and recovery

Hi,

Glad you asked this question, as I too am curious to know the answer to this one. I have also been taking lots of Vit. C in prep for surgery and recovery. Wondering if it will do any good whatsoever though. My 3 kids have all been sick lately, one with strep, sinus, and ear infection. One with scarlet fever and one with a stomach virus. I started taking Vit. C about 1 1/2 months ago when I found out my surgery was suppose to be in June. Well, it was cancelled and reschduled for Aug. 3rd, so I am still taking my vitamin C... religiously! Any info on this would be greatly appreciated!

Please check with your DR about any OTC supplements that you are taking to find out if you are supposed to stop a certain time before surgery. Also, your DR needs to be aware of what you have been taking leading up to surgery because s/he doesn't want to give you anything that may react badly with it.

Well I talked to pretesting today during blood drawing and the Anesth Dr. told me to stop everything, including multi-vitamin because it could affect my bleed time. I stopped everything just to be safe. I am pretty healthy, no heart, diabetes etc to worry about. I am trying to watch the tea I am drinking, he said to stay away from Ecchinacea, St Johns Wort and even OTC motrin, naprosyn and asprin. So Watch out taking C I guess until post-op. Just make sure that you let them know EVERYTHING you are taking INCLUDING HERBALS!
