I have severe PMS will a hyster help?

This is my first time visiting this site and I'm really impressed. I'm so confused about the decision that I have to make. I suffer from severe PMS, or PMDD. My life is not my own for two weeks out of the month. I'm 44 and my gyno just took me off the Nuva Ring. He suggests that the only relief that I will get is to have a hyster. I know my hormones are all out of whack - my questions are will I have to be on hormones after the surgery and has anyone had the surgery for severe PMS?
Thank you all so much for this site!

I have severe PMS will a hyster help?

PJ,
I don't think that PMS is a reason to have a hyst. Using artifical hrt comes with no guarantees. We are all different so hrt is not a one size fits all. It took me close to a year to find my balance and I still have some ups and downs. Removal of my female organs has brought some other problems for me. Also, a hyst is MAJOR surgery.

Read thru some of the messages in this forum and you will see that for some it is not as easy as taking or pill or putting on a patch.

We also have a forum here called The Road Less Travelled for those that have continuing problems and complications after a hyst.

You may also want to check out the Hysterectomy Options and Alternatives forum.

Good luck! I hope you can find some less invasive measures to help with your problems.

I have severe PMS will a hyster help?

Hi PJ and welcome! I've moved your post over here to the Hysterectomy Options and Alternatives forum, which is the forum for ladies who are considering a hysterectomy but are not yet scheduled for one.

I agree with (((Kim))) that a hysterectomy is major surgery and should be a treatment of last resort. As a major surgery, it comes with the risks of all major surgeries, plus the added risk that not everyone finds attaining hormonal balance easy after the surgery. We have members who are still struggling years after the surgery to feel as good as they did before .

That said, however, we have had a few women come through here who have had a hyst with ovary removal (remember it is the ovaries that are responsible for the PMDD symptoms, not the uterus; the uterus is just the vehicle for the bleeding and cramping part of it). Here is a recent thread on the subject:

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

I have severe PMS will a hyster help?

I've been on various hormones for 2 1/2 years for PMS/PMDD. I also have done the vitamin/natural route. Nothing has helped for more than a couple of months.

If you haven't spent years with cramps and bloating for 3 weeks a month (and breasts so sore that you have to live in a sports bra, wake yourself up at night when you turn onto your stomach, and want to kill anyone who even thinks about hugging you), you probably can't imagine that PMS could be "serious."

After 3 years, my doc just recently suggested a lap-supra hysterectomy.

This site has me so terrified that I'll probably just go on feeling miserable for the next 15 years, instead.

C'est la vie.
