I need your advice...please...
I am 40 yrs. old and an ultrasound just revealed 2 large fibroids - one of them between the walls of the uterus. They have been causing a lot of trouble with heavy bleeding, long periods, etc., and because of that I am now getting ironpills.
I will be seeing a OB/gyn on 3. April. He was recommended by a friend who had a vaginal hyst done last year.
My GP recommended I have the uterus removed instead of hormone treatment. I also have Multiple Sclerosis and he feels I have enough to worry about. I agree with him - I don't need the uterus anymore; but I can't figure out if I need to keep the cervix???
My worry is that the MS in itself can cause loss of bladder control and I don't know if it would get worse, if I didn't have the cervix to help control it a little.
I also worry about not being able to achieve those deep orgasms and being too dry.
But if I keep my cervix, then I cannot have a vaginal hyst, correct? Again, I worry about an extended recovery time due to the MS.
I should also mention that my mom had a radical hyst. due to cancer, but it is 28 years ago and she doesn't remember where it started. She also had 1/3 lung removed last year due to cancer - one tough lady at 77 years!!
I am so glad I found this place!!

There are lots of recent threads about the cervix, so try a search to read about some of the pro's and con's of keeping it. Another procedure to consider is an LSH (laproscopic supracervical hysterectomy). It leaves your cervix, and is minimally invasive, so recovery is faster than even a vaginal hysterectomy. Some women aren't eligible for it (my fibroids were too big, but they're huge--5 months size--and if I'd been willing to go to Chicago I might have found someone who would use LSH on them). More importantly, many doctors aren't skilled with it yet, so you'd have to look around for someone who has done them regularly. But if LSH would be appropriate for you, then it's well worth the effort to find a surgeon who has trained in the technique.
Good luck!

I have fibromyalgia and my recovery has taken longer than others but I am doing better than I thought I would at this point. The vaginal cuff that the dr. will give you should help with the bladder control, at least it hasn't been a problem for me and as far as the big O it will take a while but it will come back.

Hi Hoyt,
In pre-op, I also had two large fibroids. I had a LSH and I am still very pleased with my surgery results.
I might suggest you check out the Hyster Sisters link below. It goes over questions to ask your Dr. in pre-op and the ~different~ types of hysts. Just scroll down.
https://www.hystersisters.com/vb2/view_preop.htm
On the cervix, I was a good candidate to keep mine. I had normal pap smears for years and I had a sturdy cervix. My Dr. thought the cervix helps with future pelvic support and with sex. Both have been true for me. I can feel my cervix doing its job.
Also, if a Hyster Sister keeps one or both ovaries and the cervix, there is a chance of a mini-period in post-op. Something you might have read about. I had my cervix cauterized during my hyst and I have not had a mini-period. Mini-period ladies generally report that it only requires a panty liner at that time of the month.
Best wishes,
Mary

Good Morning and thanks for the answers,
How do I find out which docs perform the LSH in my area? I read that it is only performed a few places in the country and I am wondering if there is database or a website where you can see it.
Thanks!

Hoyt,
You don't say where you are; but I would check with the OB/GYN dept of a major hospital that also has a medical school attached to it, so you might start with looking at where the medical schools are in your state; these are usually at the major universities in the state. Usually there will be a surgeon there who is trained in the procedure- contact gynocology oncology (cancer surgeons), or reproductive endrocrinology surgeons (they often handle multiple births due to in-vitro fertilization and thus are often trained in the LSH procedure as well.
Good luck. I had an LSH last May and was released from the Hospital the next morning, and went back to work 3 weeks later, so it is a remarkable procedure. They put 3 one-inch incisions in your abdomen and thread the uterus using a device called a morcellator which pulls it out through the small incisions in threads, so it is a minimally invasive procedure.

I am in North Dakota; close to the Canadian border. I just talked to my GP and he will call around - if nothing else, I am sure the Mayo Clinic does it, if a person can get in.
My GP thinks I should have the cervix removed as well. Because I had an abnormal pap a few years ago and they took a cervical biopsy that was abnormal, but not cancerous. Since then my paps have been normal, so I don't think that is reason enough to remove it.
Oh, so many decisions; it sure is difficult.
Be well.

Hi Hoyt,
I also had a LSH. I drove an hour to get to my Dr's office. It was well worth it for me!!
I agree with Torrie and what she said about checking with major hospitals in your area. You also might check with the gyneo medical groups.
Here is a link that might help you with your info. searching. You could also e-mail the web site for information:

Also, here is a link that goes over the LSH surgery:

Best wishes again,

Hoyt,
North Dakota near the Canadian border! You'll probably have to go to surrounding states. I checked at the Univ. of Minnesota, Fairview, Women's Health Center and 3 of the gynocological oncologists do list laparoscopic surgery. Here is the web site:

Beyond that, you could try the Mayo Clinic at Rochester, MN, the Univ. of Wisconsin at Madison, WI, or the Univ. of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa.

hi, I too have MS and had aTAH almost 5 weeks ago. My recovery is going very slowly. I too was having bladder problems and was taking DetrolLA. Since my hyster I haven't taken them. I don't have those sudden urges to go pee like I used too. my main problem is the fatigue. I can sleep 18 hrs. a day sometimes. But everyone is different, good luck and speedy recovery
