1 week after surgery
Hi, this is my first time to post. It has been one week since my surgery. I am still bleeding a little bit. I had a viginal hysterectormy plus a bladder tie up. I am having a little bit of pain, like heavy cramps. I was told no lifting, bending, pushing or pulling for 4 weeks. My question is there a weight limit on lifting. I have 2 small dogs one that weights 9 lbs., and one that weighs 11 lbs. Couldn't I lift them at least once or twice a day as needed. I also have to feed them and bend to put there bowls on the floor and to pick them up. I am also sitting in my chair at the kitchen table and typing on my lap top. I get up and walk around the house and then in the eveing I will walk out sides just about a block or two, watch tv and sleep, this is all I am doing. Could someone try to answer my questions?
Thank you,
Drafter

Re: 1 week after surgery
Hi Drafter,
Please just be patient. It's only been a week. I would say that only you will be able to judge how much you can lift and walk around. If you are feeling tired, do less. If you feel up to it, do a bit more. Thats what I've been doing. I'm 8 weeks post abdominal hysterectomy and I've only just started driving again.
Chin up and take care of yourself.

Re: 1 week after surgery
i too am 1 week after surgery I was told to lift nothing if at all possible in the first 2 weeks after surgery, a cup of drink, knife and fork only! They call it 'hotel living here' after this nothing over 5llbs until 4 weeks after surgery and then build it up very slowly, to keep all bending and stretching to an absolute minimum until 6 week check-up, any bending and strectching puts pressure on the stitches and if you pop one you will increase your bleeding for one and hamper a good recovery to the cuff they have stitched. if you are in pain it's probably your body telling you to stop and rest, walking is fine but do not overdo it. Watching tv and sleeping are 2 of the best things you can do right now to help your body heal right.
If you are unsure speak to your doctor or surgeon as they all seem to have different rules depending on where you live etc.
Hope this helps you a little

Re: 1 week after surgery
Hi Drafter,
My date was the same as yours and I had a subtotal abdominal hyst, I was told not to lift anything. I am finding it very hard to do! I have a cat, probably 13 lbs. and have not lifted her or allowed her on my lap for fear she will jump up on her own and land on my tummy! She is quite upset with me at the moment! I am healing well and just in the last day or 2 find I can bend very carefully to reach her dish, though I know am am not supposed to do that either. As for the cramps, curious what meds your Dr. prescribed? I have Ocycodone and Motrin. I am trying to wean myself off the Oxcycodone and am now feeling some cramping.

Re: 1 week after surgery
I am taking Hydroco/apap (Vicondin) and Motrin (8oomg) I am only taking 1 instead of 2 Vicondin as needed. Motrin every 8 hours. I have 1 Vicondin left, just call to see if they would refill it? Are you spotting a little blood still? I can get away wearing a panty liner and changing it about 4 times a day. Today a little bit more blood. I think I over did things yesterday.

Re: 1 week after surgery
I'm new too!
In my opinion I would take it easier. I had to have my vaginal cuff repaired and it has been more painful the second time around. I felt abit like you after a week and thought it was fine. At 5 wks. I started having scatchy feeling inside and my bleeding didn't really ever stop. So I thought best just to have him check things out. Even the nurse was like it's probably nothing. Well, all my stiches had disovled even the ones holding my internal organs back and I wasn't healing. So I had to have all the stiches redone it was like having a vaginal hysterectomy after the laproscopic one. Every time you bend down you are lifting your own body weight back up plus the dogs. You could pour it from higher up and I'm sure they'd clean up what misses. What about a neighbor before they go off to work? Just take care of yourself (I'm speaking to myself too!) As I have been told a thousand times by my husband and my mother-in-law what is 8wks to the rest of your life! Your new friend, dmdemarzo

Thanks for the advice. I wonder how long you should be bleeding. I am just bleeding a little.

Re: 1 week after surgery
I don't mean to scare you but i wasn't bleeding more than a light period. My doctor said spotting only this time or esle i need to go in. This time I'm spotting then it seems a little heavier then spotting again. It's only the first week so I'm not going to panick yet! Bordom may kill me first!

Re: 1 week after surgery
I would not pick up the dogs yet. I was told not to lift more than a gallon of milk (5 pounds) for 6 weeks. I am glad that I didn't. You want to be on the safe side & make sure you do not do any internal damage while you are healing. Even when you feel fine there still is a lot of healing inside. It is hard not to do anything but all I did was walk & rest. I had a very good recovery because of being so careful. Take it very easy. Best wishes to you.

Re: 1 week after surgery
I read (I believe it was in the Hystersisters booklet) that spotting is normal, and it should be slightly brownish in color. If you see any bright red blood you should call your Dr. Take it easy with the rest of us, though I know its hard sometimes!
