Re: managing pain question
Mine was a TAH with a vertical scar as opposed to the smaller horizontal scar that I had anticipated so I was doubly grateful for all the pain relief.
Currently I'm down to Tylenol, and small doses of Dilaudin as needed.
They'll tell you not to be a hero when it comes to pain medication and I had a few days where I lost track of when I had my last dose....it's not worth it...keep on top of it as best you can without over medicating.

Re: managing pain question
Just a word of caution about the spinal. If you have any problems with pain meds you may want to think about just having the pump. I have weird reactions to lots of pain meds so can't take many. I think because of this, my body had a horrible reaction to an epidural on a different surgery. At first when I woke up I was feeling pretty good. Then became really lethargic until I suddenly woke up. I ended up not being able to sit or lay down because I was so anxious. After hours at home dealing with this, my mom called the hospital and they said to get me to er immediately. Well long story short, I ended up needing IV Benadryl for five days with me being in hospital because of weird reactions. It was horrible and I always caution people about it in case you are someone who reacts badly to medicines. It may be great for you but just wanted to let you know of side effects. My reaction is rare but it was intense and horrible. Also got a spinal headache about day three(I think that is the word they use) where I was in agony. Thought I was having a stroke but "just" a reaction from epidural. Had to drink a LOT of Sprite or Mountain Dew to get rid of it.
I am sure you will be fine but I just wanted to let you know the down side of this. Sending hugs

Re: managing pain question
I recommend getting a small notebook and writing down when you take a dose of meds. This has helped me a lot as sometimes you lose track of when you took it last and you do not want to take narcotics too soon.
I also track when I take the ibuprofen. I am not so worried about the iron, colace and antibiotics/fungals as those are a little easier to keep track of.

Re: managing pain question
I just wanted to say that I took next to nothing because I had VERY little pain. Post op I had no spinal or pump...one shot of demoral early on and nothing but motrin which didn't start until sometime after breakfast the next day. I am pretty sensitive to narcotic pain relief (lasts forever and makes me sick) so I came home with darvocet which I never took. Took motrin here and there, and not very often. Guess I was lucky that I didn't have pain.

Re: managing pain question
I had the epidural and there was hardly any pain when I woke up. I decided that when the Dr. came in while they were getting me ready for surgery. I was just like you and debated for weeks on what to do and still hadn't made up my mind. It was really nice not to have all that pain right when you wake up. Good luck to you, let us know how it goes. By the way, I will be 2 weeks post op tomorrow. Feeling great!!
