notification of a urine infection

i had a phone call 10 minutes ago from the family drs (pharmasist attached) to say the hospital had written to say i have a urine infection and need some medication, i dont understand as i had my hyst 4 weeks 4 days ago, can it really take this long to inform a patient that they have an infection when they didn't know in the first place,,

i thought all my pain was down to recovery,, guess not, i did have a catheter put in but a few hours after surgery for some reason they didn;t put one in post op and dr was told off by nursing staff,

the only indication of a urine infection i can think of is rather sweet smelling urine when i go,, rather like wet straw smell

Re: notification of a urine infection

That sounds very unusual. If you had a urinary tract infection 4 weeks ago that wasn't treated I would guess you would be in excrusiating pain. I had my first and only urinary tract infection while in the hospital recovering from my LSH. I had my foley cathedar reinserted 2 times while in the hospital because I couldn't urinate on my own. I ended up with a terrible infection which made me feel like I was urinating razor blades. I had a fever of almost 102 F. and I ended up urinating all over the floor. With medication I recovered. You should re-check with your doctor.................Let us know how it turns out...........

Re: notification of a urine infection

A UTI doesn't always present with symptoms. I had about eight since last June and symptoms vary. I had one that needed three courses of antibiotics, during which my only symptom after about three weeks with the infections was difficulty peeing due to all the swellimg from the infection. That and really smelly urine. But I had infections were I did not feel anything.

Re: notification of a urine infection

Can you just stop by your Dr. office or a local lab and have a quick urine test done before taking the meds? I would feel better knowing I still had the infection before taking the meds. The culture I had done took about 24 hours for results. Good luck

Not possible in uk for on spot tests but phoned both family dr and hospital the results were from when I was on the ward and as I have lower back pain and urine smells a bit sweet they both said to take meds

Re: notification of a urine infection

At least you have the meds and in a short time the infection will be gone instead of spreading or getting worse.

Re: notification of a urine infection

I am 3 weeks post op. TAH ovaries removed. Had my follow up a few days ago. Mentioned to my Dr. that I had the urge to pee a lot during the night. He asked for a sample, so just got the results today--UTI. Just when I was feeling good too! LOL! I had NO symptoms, so just be careful. I was prescribed an antibiotic for 2 weeks.
