Bipolar % hysterectomy...so many questions
I had the third biospy of my life about a month ago. Went back for the results..the specialist said on a scale from 1-3 (3 being the most sevre) i'm at a three. The parts the dr cut out, the cells are at the edge. (cancer runs rampid in my family history) And that due to this, and the fact that at 39 my periods are lasting almost 15 days a month. His advice was to have the surgery. which of course isn't really a second thought...the confusion is coming into play about whether to keep my ovaries or not. If i keep them i still have pms and go thru menopause (as i'm sure ya'll know lol). Or do i have everything taken out. My concern comes with how it's going to effect my type 2 bipolar disorder. Everything i've seen on websites says it can make it worse (having the ovaries out). Things i've read on this website, it looks like women have had good results with no pms in their life. My pms is like a train derailing. One moment i want to hug you and cry the next i'd rather punch y ou as look at you. I'm also nervous about estrogen and breast cancer. I'm just so confused at this moment, that if i stop and give it serious thought i'll cry. Oh and throw in the panic attacks when i think about being put under. I feel like a mess Anyone's advice or help would be appreciated more then you'll ever know...

Re: Bipolar % hysterectomy...so many questions
Hi Kansas -
When you talk about the biopsy, was this a breast lump biopsy? Can you tell me more about that? I currently have Stage IV (terminal) breast cancer, and bipolar 2. I have never suffered from bad PMS swings though. Because my cancer is the type that feeds on estrogen, I had my ovaries out with the hysterectomy done 6 days ago on 5/9. I was really scared about this - about not being able to take any hormones EVER to replace the estrogen, but so far, I feel completely normal. Completely. I have read about ladies hitting the hormonal wall in the week or two after surgery - because I think our bodies have some estrogen floating around, and until it gets used up, we don't necessarily feel a difference.
Everyone is so different, so it's hard to know how your body will react. For me, because of my cancer, and the fact that I had a huge fibroid, which felt like an alien had inhabited my abdomen, I am so glad I had the surgery. So glad. My recovery has been great, and I no longer have the urge to pee every 2 seconds. I feel so much better/more free.
Also, if you're really nervous about being put under, they can give you something in your IV in pre-op to calm you down. I've been put under a bunch, and the first couple times, I was really scared ("What if I don't wake up??"). But I always wake up. It's always fine.
Not sure if this has helped any - I know this is such a huge decision. I debated the ovary question for years. Now I'm at peace with it, and nothing that I feared has happened (at least not yet!).
Hugs,
Gaggle

Re: Bipolar % hysterectomy...so many questions
Hi kansas6613 -
I wish I could answer your questions regarding this surgery and bipolar disorder. We have had other ladies on this site with that disorder, so hopefully, one of them will see this post and respond.
If you don't having you ovaries out, you will still have the same pms, as I understand. If you loose your ovaries, I don't know if you can go on hrt, given your bipolar disorder. You really need to talk to your doctor about your medical condition to see what he would advise.
