I totally disagree with that. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and we all had our surgeries for different reasons. I have read many of your posts coughy and you are definitely one of the luckier ones who was able to cook, do some light housekeeping, go shopping and drive in the first few weeks of your recovery.
I didn't have such an easy time and we both had the same type of surgery. Anyone that is new to this community needs to see both sides.
Your recovery may have been a piece of cake but for others it was much more challenging. The majority of women who post here have issues and are honestly reaching out for suggestions or simply sharing.... not making things worse than what they are.

With all respect, I don't think coughy meant to imply that the women posting are exaggerating what's going on with them and making things seem worse than they are *for the woman posting*.
I think rather what she meant was that because this is a support site, reading all the posts can give the reader a skewed idea of what an "average" recovery is like - if there is such a thing!
Women are more likely to post their stories when they've having a bad time and need support. They're less likely to post when everything's going well. So a person who hasn't had surgery yet needs to keep that in mind when reading the post-op posts.

Re: Do I need to have someone with me 24/7 after surgery? Hysterectomy TVH 9/24/15
I had a TAH with 3 day hospital stay and told my family to go about their business too. Honestly, the only thing I wished I'd done differently that first day was having someone set me up with plenty of water and tea right next to the couch (doc didn't want me going up the stairs to the bedroom) so I didn't have to get up as often. I spent so much time sleeping there was no need for someone to have been there and I had the phone right next to me to call for help if heaven forbid I needed it.
So I would say have someone set you up a nice little insulated bag or cooler with some cold water or a big thermos of hot drinks (I wanted both and I normally only drink hot tea) to cut down on how many trips you need to make to the kitchen.

Hello Chriswife!
Thank you for your response! I have already put my kids on call and my boyfriends family lives close by and can be at my house in less then 10 minutes if I need them. I think I am all covered.
Thanks again to everyone who responded! I love the support of this site!! =)

Do I need to have someone with me 24/7 after surgery? Hysterectomy TVH 9/24/15
My doctor told me that I could be alone after four days. It didn't work out that way though. I had a terrible reaction to the 800mg Ibuprofen. It turned me into a completely helpless zombie. I couldn't even walk alone. My SO ended up staying home with me for a week.

No way I could have been alone the first week after surgery! I spent 3 days in the hospital & then had someone stay with me for the first few weeks. However, I was given a vertical incision & that's the worst! Your experience should be quite a bit easier. Anesthesia and trauma sap your energy - it's not so much that you CAN"T perform light tasks, as it is that you just don't have it in you to deal with them repeatedly throughout the day. For this reason several trips to the bathroom, and to feed or let out a pet, and to get food (NOT cooking!) or water is about the max you'll be able to manage for a few days. Things should get considerably easier after that, just don't plan on being your usual self for at least a few weeks. One thing I would not have wanted to do without, post-op, were my cotton bicycle shorts. I don't know if you'll need much support with TV, but I wore mine under skirts and pants for the first couple of months & they were a Godsend! Best wishes!

I live in a 3-story home, and I was fine going up and down the stairs, fixing my own food, showering, etc.
The best thing for me was that I had friends and family who came by to take me out for lunch, dinner, etc. Everyone was originally going to bring food over and eat here, but by Day 2, I was bored and ready to get out. Since I wasn't allowed to drive for 2 weeks, this was a nice treat: every day, someone would come over, pick me up, and we'd go out.
For me, it was all a million times better than I thought it would be. I was in so much pain and had so much bleeding literally up to the minute I was put under. As soon as I woke up, I started to feel normal again. Yes, I had "surgical soreness", but I never had pain.
Everyone is different, and it is a great idea to let people know you are having this surgery so they can be on hand to help, if you need them.

I'm glad to here this, I live alone also, and have been concerned. Thank you.

This is a good example of how different we all are! :-)
I had a vertical incision, 7" long, and spent 3 days in the hospital. Once home, I had no problems taking care of my cats and myself. I went for my first walk outdoors the day after I got home from the hospital and also spent a lot of time sitting outside reading and sewing.
I'm not much of a cook in any case, and my appetite was kind of wonky the first two weeks anyway. The first week all I wanted was fruit, yogurt, peanut butter on whole grain toast and canned lentil soup. I was certainly up for toasting bread, heating soup and making tea and coffee.
The second week eggs and vegetables tasted really good, so I made veggie omelets. That's about as complicated as I get when it comes to cooking even when I'm *not* recovering from surgery.
Washed the dishes while standing at the sink, kept the cats fed and watered, kept the litter box scooped. Nothing else was critical, so I just ignored it.

SmizeYourself, had you had that reaction to lower doses of ibuprofen before? My boss can't take ibuprofen at all, knocks her right out.

GIBBS
Not all hysters are equal. When researching, please take care to know exactly what type of hyster is being referred to. The length and difficulty of recovery depends upon the type of procedure you will be having. Laproscopic & vaginal hysters are the quickest & easiest, followed by the bikini cut, then the vertical incision type. Removal of the uterus only is much simpler (in terms of recovery) than also removing the ovaries and/or cervix. The worst of all is when hyster is performed due to cancer bc, in addition to the vertical incision & removal of all reproductive organs, the omentum is usually removed, and sometimes (in the event of spread) other organs are also altered or removed. Additionally, the course of recovery is effected by an individuals age & general health, as well as the possible occurrence of complications. So, like I said, not all hysters are equal. If you are young(ish) & healthy & having laproscopic, your odds of having an easy recovery (relatively speaking) shoot way up.
