Anyone else doing so much bowel prep? Tomorrow and Tursday I am on a clear liquid diet (jello, no fat bouillon, soda, clear juices, water, hard candy) for surgery on Wed. Then on Monday night, milk of magnesia. On Tuesday, a bottle of magnesium citrate, and on Tuesday night an enema before bed. (I also will take two antibiotics three times during the day and late evening on Tuesday). I'm thinking I'm gonna be "clean" enough for a colonoscopy!

Anyone else doing all this bowel prep? I told my sis that my doc must do this so that the day before surgery is so miserable that the day of surgery doesn't seem so bad!

Wow, you will be clean as a whistle!

I've heard that every dr is different. I was allowed to eat up to 8:00pm the night prior, then did an enema and then only clear liquids until 2:00am, then nothing.

Your directions do seem a little much, however, I'm sure there is a reason!

You're almost there! wishing you a speedy recovery...

I'm on a clear fluids day today too....I wonder if rum counts as a clear fluid?? LOL I can't have anything past midnight (except for my morning meds with a tiny sip of water). You're regimen seems to be long....but you won't have much to worry about after the surgery for a while.

Best wishes to you fora speedy recovery!!

Appreciate your replies, ladies....

Maybe there is a small blessing in being so empty that I won't need to worry about a bm for a few days! Someone told me it could also have to do with minimizing gas pain, but I don't really know if that's so.

Best wishes to everyone!

Well, your colon should be squeaky clean after this! My pre op appt is the day before surgery, so we'll see what they suggest for me!

My Doctor/Hospital instructions were nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before surgery. Part of the prep for surgery was an enema at the hospital that morning ; I guess each doctor does have different approaches. Best wishes.

Re: Prep.

Day two before surgery, three bottles of Boost, no fibre, then clear liquids or Jello. Bottle of sodium phosphate by 4:00pm and stay beside washroom. Day one before surgery, Jello upon Jello upon Jello, chicken broth or beef broth, or flavoured water, nothing else. Bottle two of sodium phosphate(plug your nose while drinking the stuff) by 4:00pm, then only water up until midnight. Nothing after midnight, or candies, nor anything. Shower, brush teeth, rinse but no swallowing, and make your way to the Hospital.

It took three days post surgery to resume normal GI movements, but then I got nailed with an unexpected hitchhiking bacteria, that has set me back by a week.

Resume eating after surgery, you will be watched to see if you can hold down liquids, stand up without wavering, and use the washroom to empty the bladder. Eat lightly for about a week following. Your body will thank you.

Hi Outdooranimal....

Sounds like your bowel prep was at least as comprehensive as mine is going to be. I've postponed a colonoscopy because of the prep, but figure if I get through this, I'll have no excuse for not doing the colonoscopy when I'm all recuperated! Did the liquid make you "go" nonstop? Hope you don't mind my asking....it's not a most pleasant subject, is it?

Thanks,
Barb

I think all I have to do is 2 Fleet enemas the morning of surgery. The girls in pre op also suggested that I stick to clear liquids the day before, so I will probably do that too.

I know I would rather do the 2 enemas then have to do a complete bowel prep. I had a colonscopy once, and the prep was definitely the worst part of that deal.

Good luck to all of you.
