Dizziness and drug sensitivies
scheduled for TVH with bladder repairs on Oct 15th. I suffer from a rare balance disorder called mal de disembarkment (Like being on a boat all the time). Most medications make me vomit or have vertigo . Anyone found any information about the types of pain medications used after surgery that have the least side effects? Had a pain pump when I had a c section 25 years ago. Was able to tolerate that. ( that had to have been something that would not affect a newborn, right?). I see they send you home with norco or vicodene, etc. Do they try these on you in hospital before they send you home or is it a trial and error kind of thing? Do all These drugs make you constipated? So much to consider...

Re: Dizziness and drug sensitivies
Hi Sparrow, be sure to let your dr and the anesthesiologist know about that. I had Tylenol and toradol in my iv, no narcotics, and they worked amazingly well. They took the iv out in the middle of the night, and as I wanted to go home in the morning, they told me they would try me on oral meds to see if I could tolerate them. That was at 5 am. At 11, when I still hadn't been given any, I asked the nurse about it as I thought it was a requirement to take them before going home. She said they don't give them unless you need and ask for them. At that point since I had gone 9 hrs with no meds at all, they let me go with scripts for hydrocodone and ibuprofen 600 which I never filled. Best of luck to you!

Hi Coughy,
Sounds like you did well in the medication department. No dizziness with the torodol? I am almost dreading the drugs more than the actual surgery.

Re: Dizziness and drug sensitivies
hi,
I have some underlying medical conditions which mean I don't do well on narcotics.
I took paracetamol 4 hourly and ibuprofen 6 hourly for the first week and found that to be enough to control the pain. I had no issue with constipation at all.

Did this paracetamol make you dizzy. I have used tramadol for pain and it made me literally pass out with dizziness for half hour

Re: Dizziness and drug sensitivies
Hi I was prescribed Ibprofen 800 and norco to take at home and 17 days out of surgery my tongue and got so swollen that I had to rush myself to the hospital as my airways was cutting off and they suspect I have an allergy to Nsaids. Since then I developed all types of sensitivities to food. I really hope this doesnt last a life time. Prior to surgery when or if the anesthelogy department calls you can share some of your concerns and then again on the day of surgery when the anesthelogist comes to talk to you make sure to restate your concerns because they are truly there to help you. I had a great team to help me from beginning to end and they all expressed there desire to help me. Good Luck!

Re: Dizziness and drug sensitivies
Paracetamol is Tylenol..my mom took Tylenol 3 which was enough.I asked dr and team before I went in can he stick to Tylenol which he did and gave me morphine push pump if needed.think I hit it twice..felt a lot better being in control of meds and not too spaced out

Re: Dizziness and drug sensitivies
Tried Tylenol with codeine. Made me incredibly anxious and like I was crawling out of my skin! I think it was the codeine. I do take Tylenol extra strength and am ok. What strength is Tylenol 3?

Re: Dizziness and drug sensitivies
Definitely have put in for a consult with anesthesiologist. I am having surgery at a teaching hospital in Southern California because of my dizziness and pain medication issues. Thanks to all who are giving me names of their meds so I can discuss with doctor when II see him/her. Also went to a pre surgery class held by the anesthesia dept. At the hospital. Again, since it is a teaching hospital, they are proactive about how to reduce the stress about anesthesia and addressed some of my preliminary concerns about further persistent dizziness as result of all medications used. I usually wake up "rough" out of anesthesia-- vomiting, crying, and taking a long time. When I had a colonoscopy, I came out well cuz I told them of my issues. That was way before of my other current dizziness issues though.
