5 weeks and strep B...

Just got the call from the Dr. that the test results from last week indicate not a yeast infection (which I was treated for) but STREP B. I just checked this site for info and the Mayo site as well to learn about it. He has prescribed some "oval's" antibiotics to use at night for the next three days. Please tell me that this is no biggy...the news of this has left me a little deflated this morning.

Re: 5 weeks and strep B...

I am sorry you are dealing with this. Your doctor sounds like he is on top of the situation and treating it, so this is a good thing.

Strep can happen anywhere in or on the body anytime one has surgery or goes to hospital. I hope the medication will fix it and you will be doing better real soon.

Perhaps someone will come along who has experience with strep B.

Re: 5 weeks and strep B...

Thanks for responding...I felt like the ONLY one that had dealt with this and was not pregnant!
I did a lot of research and called the nurse at the office to be reassured this Strp B wasnt going to kill me...I felt better the third and last day of treatment. My doctor said the yeast infection they treated me for the week before and the strep b right after was not uncommon and not to worry. It was nothing i did or didnt do and I felt better immediatly upon hearing that.

Re: 5 weeks and strep B...

I too had Strep B. I had it when I had my first child and they didn't give me the shot prior to the delivery and both him and I got very sick. He was in the hospital a week.

Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago. They ran my urine for my upcoming surgery and it showed up again. I told them of my past thing and the nurse said I was probably just a carrier. They put me on antibiotics and I guess that is all. I've not read anything other than what it can do for a mother and baby. Have you read anything other than that? Please share if so.

Re: 5 weeks and strep B...

I have done a lot of reading.
One in three women carry the Strep B virus. It can lie dormant and never be a bother...until the PH is turned upside down in the vagina from pregnancy, birth or surgery. It is not contagious except for when giving birth which is why they give you the shot before delivery. I have never been diagnosed and have one child (28 years) and had no issue then. As a matter of fact I've never had Strep B come up until after this surgery. they did give me an IV antibiotic before this surgery "just precautionary" they said and then didnt think it necessary to send me home with any. At that time strep B was not mentioned and I had never heard of it. Just assumed an antibiotic would cover a multitude of "bugs". Then at the 4 week mark I saw the doc for what we thought was yeast. I was treated for that and still had symptoms. The culture came back 5 days later that it was Strep B and they put me on a vaginal suppository for three days. That seemed to do the trick. No more burning itching or tender vagina.

Re: 5 weeks and strep B...

by the way..there are a lot of Streps (A-G if my memory is correct) and Strep B is easily treated according to my physician. As I had asked in the beginning of this thread..."tell me this isnt a biggie" its most likely not.
