post op anesthesia

Having TAH, on Monday. I am supposed to be on a pain management pump. How long do you stay on that, and are you pretty much out of it the whole time? I was on dilaudid for my c section and I would only sleep for an hour or so and be back up needing more pain medication.

Re: post op anesthesia

I had a TAH and had my pump until 2hours before I left the hospital. The pump gives you a small dose all the time and I had a button i could hit every 10 min I was out of it the 1 st day the 2nd day I was better I was awake more than out The 3rd day I was so ready to come home lol. With my c sections and tummy tuck I never had a pain pump I wish I did because it helps you manage your pain control I hope there are not a lot of typos I cab not find my glasses this morning. Ugh

Re: post op anesthesia

I had a TAH BSO, and was on the pump for about 18 hours post op along with Motrin. With the pain pump it is controlled so that you cannot give yourself an overdose. This kept my pain under control - for the most part.

After that I was on oral narcotics and Motrin for a few more days, and then to straight Motrin for about 4 weeks after that.

Re: post op anesthesia

I was on the pump up until the morning of the day I was released. Had surgery on a Thursday and went home Saturday afternoon. They kept telling me they were going to take it off the next day and give me oral meds, but they never did. Maybe they forgot, lol. I never complained of having any pain. I think I had morphine. Combine that with those leg massagers, the relaxation channel on the TV, ooohhweee

The day I went home is the first time I had oral pain meds at the hospital and they gave me that once they took the pump off and then again for the ride home.

Re: post op anesthesia

Wow. Ok. I'm kinda gonna be on my own at the hospital. I have to go to the VA and hour from home. My husband and kids will be there day 1 but after that tey have to go home. I was just wondering because my husband slept at the hospital with me for the 3 days I was in for my c section. Probably more so cuz my mom was at the house with the girls lol.

Re: post op anesthesia

I sent DH home each night to get some sleep. The nurses keep a close eye on you, so it should be fine.

Especially that first night after surgery, they were coming in for me and taking blood every 2 or 3 hours (my white count went up post op, and my temp was at 100 so there was some concern.)

Re: post op anesthesia

I was on the dilautid pump for less then 24 hours but that was my choice. keep that sucker as long as possible. Its annoying to lug around but well worth it. I ended up having to be put on percosets and morphine cause I had them take the pump. And keep the cath the first night. It'll help with sleep. Me on the other hand had them take it out before hand and regretted it.
