Post Op 7 days with a catheter
My surgery was april 13. Recovering at home after 4 days in hospital. My question is has anyone else had to have a catheter on after surgery & came home with one after a vaginal hysterectomy? Dr. says I still need to have it for 1 more week! Always feeling pressure like I have to pee all the time. Any tips from any one who's been there?

Re: Post Op 7 days with a catheter
Hi there. I had my hystserectomy in December and was sent home with a catheter for 10 days. I remember the first few days of feeling like it would fall out when having a bowel movement! I think this contributed to my discomfort first few days post op. It took me 2 days to move my bowels.
I got used to it. Worst for me was sitting- that tube was slightly uncomfortable. But I managed and it helped not having to work or sit at a desk while I had it. I used my leg bag a lot; made me feel more normal and I could go out for walks.
Hang in there! You will love the day it comes out. Also make sure you keep it clean - rinse the bag, clean the tube.

Re: Post Op 7 days with a catheter
Hi, I had a vaginal hysterectomy last week and had to wear the catheter home. I had it taken out today so it was in for a total of four days. I was so worried I would not be able to pee but I went just fine.
My tip is to stay in touch with your doctor--pressure and discomfort while wearing the foley may be a sign of a developing UTI. Monitor yourself for sings of fever and call your doctor if you think you are getting sick. Does she have you on antibiotics just in case?
When you get it out, drink a glass of water at a normal pace (do not chug a big bottle at one time.) Wait about twenty or thirty minutes. Then try to go. Try to relax.
WHile I had my catheter in I also felt pangs, moments of pressure, and once in a while a sense of fullness. I am not sure how much is normal and how much you need to notify your doctor of--but I'd say err on the side of caution and trust your instincts.
Good luck and I feel for you. The catheter is NO FUN.

Re: Post Op 7 days with a catheter
I too came home with a catheter on Wed after having a ureterel reimplantation due to complications during my hysterectomy on Feb. 4th. At times i felt like i had a full bladder and found that standing up and making sure the tube was emptying into the bag helped relieve this pressure. I was able to remove the catheter myself today and it feels great. Hang in there. It will all work out. Hope you feel better soon.
