Hysterectomy is Tuesday the 21st June and very scared!

Tomorrow is my big day and I am scared to death. I didn't sleep very well last night and this morning been feeling sick to my stomach and having some stomach pains. Is this just my nerves or should I call my PCP and go in to see her just to be sure. I had my gallbladder out almost two years ago so I have had a surgery before, but this time I am really scared and keep thinking of everything that can go wrong. My family and friends tell me I will be fine, but have never had this surgery so how do they know. What can I do to calm my nerves a little today? My girls have a softball game tonight so that will take up a couple hours, but I just don't think I will sleep tonight.
Sorry I know I am just rambling, but really really scared!

Re: Surgery is Tuesday the 21st and very scared!

Thank you MrsDavis83 I was up all night also my anxiety is through the roof. I just don't remember being this nervous before my gallbladder surgery. And on top of the anxiety I have had some pelvic pain since my period ended last week. I called dr's office and told them to let dr know about it just to be safe. Hope all goes well for you tomorrow and I will say a prayer for you!

Re: Surgery is Tuesday the 21st and very scared!

The anticipation of surgery is the worst and what you are feeling is anxiety, which is completely normal. I pretty much called my mother in tears every night the 2 weeks leading up to my hysterectomy. It will be OK! I found that keeping myself occupied - I must have packed and unpacked my hospital bag 10 times, and did every scrap of laundry I could find - helped. You probably won't sleep well tonight but the nice thing is, in the coming days, you'll be sleeping a lot so don't fight it. Also let your anesthesiologist know tomorrow when you get to the hospital how you are feeling and they can give you something in your IV to help keep you calm. If you are making yourself sick, call your surgeon this morning and see if they can also prescribe something to take the edge off.
It will all be over soon, you have less than 24 hours to go and hopefully you'll be starting a new chapter of better health tomorrow.

I'm right there with you. I go in at 6am and I am a nervous wreck. I have to work today and instead of it keeping my mind off of it, I'm finding it hard to keep myself together. Hang in there.

Re: Surgery is Tuesday the 21st and very scared!

I was super nervous (scared) as well. I have been putting the surgery off for years but was so tired of being in pain on a monthly basis. I have had 3 c-sections so kinda knew what the recovery would be like to some degree. I am VERY pleased to say that everything went well and I have had no complications. My surgery was May 18th and I got the okay for a 4 hour work day which started today. My abdominal incision is healing well and I have my 6 week check-up this week. It's a week early but my doctor is out of town next week. Hoping to get cleared for more activity after this appointment. Good luck tomorrow.

Being afraid is normal. I was a nervous wreck the day before my surgery. It didn't help that I read all sorts of horror stories about this previously. Just take deep breaths, you are going to be taken care of during surgery and closely monitored in case anything goes wrong they can take care of it quickly and effeciently.

I found having a pedicure and some meals out to be relaxing. Go pamper yourself a little. You deserve it!

Re: Surgery is Tuesday the 21st and very scared!

Ladies,
Being nervous about a procedure youve never had is normal. You will be fine. Just follow all of the doctors orders. I will tell you what I did to prepare for surgery.
Packed my bag
Gave my husband numbers to call when I came out of surgery
Bought gas X and milk of magnesia before I went to hospital so i would have that as soon as I got home. Also had to send him to buy prunes and prune juice.
I should have gone and gotten a pedicure before the surgery because i didnt feel like getting it until 2 weeks after.

Dont stress. your doctor and surgical team will take great care of you and you wont even know you've had surgery. Just remember you will feel much better when this is all over.
