Caffeine

Hi Everyone:

I have heard you can't have carbonated beverages or caffeine for quite a while after your surgery.

I don't smoke or drink, but I do like my carbonated pop. I have been trying to cut back to one can a day, but now I have the pesky caffeine headaches.

Does anyone know how long before you can drink carbonated caffeine beverages again? Any ideas on how to get rid of the caffeine induced headaches?

I'm scheduled for surgery on the 25th. I didn't think I wanted to have to deal with the headaches as well.

Thanks,
Leola

I am not sure why someone said you can't have caffeine. Although hospitals usually don't serve it. Maybe someone else can comment on that.

As far as carbonated drinks--- That has to do with gas pains. The CO2 gas in pop causes more gas. Sooooo it is not like you can't have soft drinks, but more like you should first see how much trouble you are having with gas pains before eating cabbage, broccoli, beans, and pop. The worst that could happen is a problem with gas.

Good luck to you.

Caffeine

Hi, Leola. Regarding the caffeine headaches, have you tried, if you can eat it and don't have a health problem (i.e., diabetes, etc.) some chocolate candy or a little chocolate ice cream? Something with "chocolate" in it, and of course the caffeine. Maybe this will help some. I don't know for sure. Good luck to you.

Caffeine

I was addicted to caffeine big time prior to my surgery. I did not find headaches or any symptoms of caffeine withdrawal a problem after my surgery. I had no cravings for caffeine or coffee after my surgery. I drank my first cup of coffee 3 weeks after my surgery. I've been trying to stick decaf now (which I never touched prior to my surgery).

There was another post asking about coffee recently. You might want to search for it.

On the positive side of surgery, I found it was an easy, painless way to break some old habits!

I was drinking seltzer after my surgery until I read here it makes the gas pains worse.

Caffeine

Wow, I've never heard of this. I had coffee the day after surgery (they served it in the hospital) although I only had a little bit, did not feel like eating or drinking much. I started drinking my morning coffee soon after coming home from the hospital. I guess it would be better for the bowels to hold off, but no one said anything to me, so I just had my usual. I had no problems with it.

Take care

Caffeine

Hi Leola

Here is a link to the recent thread about caffeine and carbonated beverages: https://www.hystersisters.com/vb2/sho...threadid=76012

Also ask your DR. If s/he says it's ok then go ahead. As Arlene said, it's the carbonation that can cause gas pains. Start slowly, I am a diet Pepsi drinker, no coffee or tea. I really didn't have any desire for any for a couple of weeks anyway. Water and juice is so much better for you, maybe that's why that was what my body seemed to want.

Best wishes!

clarification of previous reply

Thought I should clarify my previous reply... I had no restrictions from my DR regarding coffee or carbonated beverages or anything regarding eating or drinking post-op. I just didn't feel like eating and drinking the things I was used to before my surgery such as coffee and caffeinated beverages. I had no appetite or cravings of any kind during my recovery and no caffeine withdrawal symptoms whatsoever.
