The tube and the catheter are both inserted after you are asleep. You won't know that they are doing it. I awoke with a sore throat from the breathing tube, but that is normal and to be expected. I was afraid that I'd wake up with the tube still down my throat, but I didn't and don't have any memory of it!

Best of Luck!

Tube Down Throat

Alina53,

When my anethes. came over and said, "I'm giving you something to relax in your IV," that's the last I remember. I woke up without the tube or the catheter, but with a slight sore throat.

Make sure you bring up your concerns with the anethes. before your procedure. He was great with me as I have trouble with pain meds and he made sure to give me anti-nausea meds before I woke up.

Best wishes and good luck!

They can't place the endotracheal tube in until you are asleep, you have a gag reflex when you are awake that prevents them from placing it. Once they have put the medication in your IV you will drift off into a calm peaceful sleep and then they will put in the ET tube and they will place the catheter in to empty your bladder.
You may have a dry scratchy throat from it but that should be the only symptom you have. You shouldn't have any memory from it at all.
Try not to worry about the anesthesia, the doctors that do it know what they are doing and they are very skilled at their job.

I have no memory of the tube going in but when I woke up it was still in. I started to grab at it because I felt very uncomfortable, the recovery nurse told me to to relax and she pulled it out. You would think this would be horrible but it really was not. It did not hurt at all and what a relief it was to get it out. I have had surgery 8 times and this was the second time I woke up with the tube down my throat.

As far as the Cath goes you will be asleep when they put it in. I got mine out the next morning after surgery and barley felt it. It's nothing to have the cath taken out. Getting your IV and even having your blood pressure taken is more uncomfortable tha the cath coming out.

Tube Down Throat

I just had my hyst last Friday - like everyone says, the anesthesiologist will take care of any fears. By the time I got to the hospital on surgery day, I was strung out & nervous. I made one mention of a headache & my nervousness, and he said "we'll take care of all that right now", after that, I could've been laying on the beach in Aruba!

I vaguely remember my docs coming in pre-op & saying a few words, and that was it. I wasn't even awake when they started rolling me away!

You can ask the anesth. to use a small tube to avoid having the dry, scratchy throat.

I had my thyroid removed 11 yrs. ago, and my vocal chords were slightly damaged, making me prone to discomfort at the slightest irritation.

I always tell the anesth. ahead of time and ask if they can use the samllest tube and then he told me that he would 'lube it up good' to avoid the discomfort after.

I am happy to say that I did not even know that there was a tube in my throat.

To echo others, let the anesth. know of your concerns, they should take good care of you!!!

Good Luck!!!!

Like everyone else said there was no tube or cath in site before surgery. One thing I might add from my experience is you can wake up to a dry and scratchy throat. I brought hard candy to suck on after i woke up and it really helped.
