Upcoming hysterectomy: Caring for small children
Hi everyone! I have my surgery coming up early November and have been busy getting the house prepared. I have 4 small children ranging from ages 5-2 months. I've read other posts and got some good tips for caring for the older 3, such as placing stools by furniture and getting some favorite snacks and crafts to do. I was just wondering if anyone had any tips for caring for a baby? She will turn 3 months the same week I'll be having my LAVH and is just over 10 lbs, so there's a lot of bending over to pick her up out of the bassinet or swing. And if anyone has any other tips for the older kids I would gladly take them! We live 1200 miles away from family and my mom will be down the first 10 days, so the rest of the recovery period I will be alone during the day. Thank you very much!!

Hi LittleSquishies -
You will definitely need help with your little ones and your baby. Keep in mind you will be under lifting restrictions: 10 lbs for 6 weeks and 20 lbs for 8 weeks is typical. Bending over will be very difficult as well - for quite some time. Can someone else help after your mom leaves?
Here are articles that may help:
Recovering from Hysterectomy with Small Children
Resuming Childcare after Hysterectomy
Breastfeeding after a Hysterectomy
I do not have kids so I cannot offer any personal advice. Hopefully women with young children will see this post and respond.

Upcoming hysterectomy: Caring for small children
Hi! I too have Little’s, ages 4, 2, and 14 months. You are better prepared than me on the crafts. But luckily my husband has quite a bit of leave and is able to take off 3 weeks. I’m still nervous about it all though. I’m scheduled for this upcoming Tuesday the 24th, but me and my family all have horrible head and chest colds right now so I may be postponed.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy: Caring for small children
Thank you for the links, marestail!! Packing meals and snacks the night before is a great idea, I'll have to have my husband help with it! Unfortunately we don't have any close friends that would be able to help once my mom leaves. The week after she leaves will be Thanksgiving so my husband will be off work for that and will be able to help. He has quite a bit of vacation time but doesn't seem to understand the recovery is going to be harder than after childbirth, so I'm hoping to convince him to take some time off!
Cheryl, my boys just turned 3 and 5 and my oldest daughter is 21 months, so about the same age gap as your 3! Hopefully your household will get better soon and your surgery won't be postponed!

Hi LittleSquishies -
Having a hysterectomy is MAJOR SURGERY. I have read the only surgery more major is open heart surgery. This is a very big deal, and you will need help.
Have your DH read Mister HysterSisters so he can have some idea of what you are up against.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy: Caring for small children
what about a mother's helper for a while during the day? Maybe a college student? Or a high schooler who can get the kids up and ready in the mornings? Is there a church/YMCA/community center drop-in Moms Morning Out type program? At least for the older ones?

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy: Caring for small children
Thank you for the tips everyone! I met with my doctor and some of the staff from the hospital's surgery department yesterday and brought up my concerns with them so I thought I would update! For weight restrictions I am on super light duty while my mom is down, then was instructed to just listen to my body but nothing heavier than the baby in a carrier (I don't have to leave the house alone til 5 weeks, so that's not a major concern). The surgery department nurse I met with said they would have a nurse checking on me every couple of days at first to make sure healing is going well and I don't need stricter restrictions. I also talked with my neighbor who has 3 kids around the same age as mine. Her mom also needed a hysterectomy for adenomyosis, so she offered to help since she knows how hard recovery will be. Plus with Veteran's Day and Thanksgiving my husband will be off quite a bit. I'm thankful how helpful the doctors, nurses and neighbor have been since I brought up my concerns to them and am a lot less nervous about Tuesday!
