HELP! Question about Gallbladder surgery and taking my Premarin!!
Hello, Sisters!
Those of you who have known me for a long time know that I have had beaucoup surgeries over the past several years, including and since my hyst., almost 3 years ago, now. I just had my gallbladder removed on 9-28 after a month of being in doubled over pain, waiting for a diagnosis, and then waiting for a surgeon. Well, I got out of the Castle the same day as surgery because I pushed to come home...YIPPEE!! Anyway, my husband's Grandmother called and had this HORROR STORY for me about when she had her Gallbladder surgery, YEARS ago, and took her Premarin, right after, and suffered a blood clot that almost killed her, and the Premarin was found to be the culprit of the blood clot. Now she has me scared to death to take my Premarin, and my Dr. is out of town until Thursday when I see him. I'm sweating my hiney off and those who live with me are ready to move into a hotel room thanks to me setting the thermostat on 64 and the mood swings I'm having without my Premarin. HELP! The "drug sheet" on Premarin from the Pharmacy advises against women who've had Gallbladder disease/surgery taking Premarin-BUT, it also advises against women who have had certain cancers taking it, and I've been there, done that. HELP!! I'm scared to death that if I take my Premarin, I might get a blood clot or something!!!
I know that some of you Sisters are nurses, and I know that many of you have had this surgery--and while I know that none of you can give me medical advice, I was hoping some of you could share your information with me. Thanks so much, girls!!!

HELP! Question about Gallbladder surgery and taking my Premarin!!
Hi (((Christy))) I'm sorry you've had to have yet another surgery. Boy can I identify with that!
Did your DR mention anything about stopping your Premarin? While it is true that estrogen can increase the likelihood of a blood clot, especially in those predisposed to DVT, in the early weeks after surgery, not taking it has its own risks and can be, as you have found, rough on you during a time when your body needs its energy to heal, not to fight menopausal symptoms.
I think I'd call the DR's office and speak to the DR who's on call - just make sure it's OK for you to be taking your Premarin given your own personal history. If necessary that on call DR can check with your own DR and get back to you. I certainly wouldn't take medical advice from a relative who's not a medical professional, no matter how well-meaning he or she might be.
Best wishes for a smooth recovery!
s,
-Linda

HELP! Question about Gallbladder surgery and taking my Premarin!!
(((Surferbabe)))
Thank you so much for your help! I can't believe it's going to be my 3 year Hysterversary on Friday! After talking to the on call Dr. and my GP, I have decided that it should be safe for me to go ahead and take my Premarin, and you are SO very right, I am taxing my body by NOT taking it, right now!
