I have 12 fibroids and they range in size from a walnut to an orange. My dr said she may have a hard time disconnecting the blood vessels laproscopically (Da Vinci) if can not get uterus tilted and get behind to where the blood vessels are. In that case she would have to convert to an abdominal method. Just was wondering if your doctor had warned you of same possibility?

Yep, I got the same warning. Need access to the back. I had a 25 week uterus and a LSH. My ovaries were also removed. Doc's skill is a big factor in this surgery, experience is important.

If the cervix is also removed laparoscopically, its called a TLH, total lap hyster. The recovery time is longer when the cervix is removed.

It is my understanding that when the uterus is very large, the doctor goes in and removes some of the fibroids to then be able to manipulate the uterus and gain access to the critical areas for severing ligaments and blood supply. So, sort of a myometcomy and then hysterectomy. I think my surgeon had to do this to me because he mentioned that the fibroids had outgrown their blood supply and were soft and mushy and he had a difficult time removing them.
