5 days posts hysterectomy - hibiclens and dermabond

I am 5 days post op. I had a abdominal with everything but the left ovary removed. I have been showering the past 3 days since I have been home with Hibiclens on my stomach and incision. I am overweight and the Dr. put the incision in a very bad place under my fat apron and today when I gently pulled up to look at the bruising and the incision I noticed the skin flap is pulling apart as if the dermabond is no longer there. I had no plans to use the hibiclens after today but I wonder if using it for those three days caused it to weaken prematurely. I looked on the dermabond information and the hibiclens and it says there is nothing that says it will break the bond like petroleum sometimes will. So Im having the Mr. stop and get me some butterfly band aides to put over the incision but wonder what others think of this? When is it normal for the dermabond to begin breaking down? I would rather it come off then it not come off after several weeks but this seems too soon. Thanks in advance.

Hi

I sorry to hear about your issue. I also had dermabond. I made an appointment with me doctor just in case she use staples. I am glad I kelp it. She put Steir-strips on my wound bikini cut area. It fell of in a week. I have an apron also. If you don't see your doctor have your Mr pick up a box.

Feel better

Hibiclens is a very strong (medical grade) anti-bacterial. You really shouldn't be using it unless your dr instructed you to do so. And it is not meant to be used on open wounds like the incision area (did you read the instructions and warnings that came w/ it?)

http://www.hibiclens.com/clinical/hi...-facts-warning
Do not use:

if you are allergic to chlorhexidine gluconate or any other ingredient in this preparation
as a patient preoperative skin preparation of the head or face
in contact with the meninges
in the genital area
on wounds that involve more than the superficial layers of skin

You can use regular anti-bacterial soap. Have you called your dr's office to let them know what's happening to your incision? If not, they need to know. Your dr might want to see you.

Im not stupid thank you! Yes I think I said in my original post that I read and researched about the use of hibiclens! I am 7 days post op and my incision is not pink or red! It is not seeping or weeping! My question was if hibiclens weakens the dermabond prematurely which I take it you do not know that answer as you offered nothing on that topic...but 7 days post op I am now less concerned about the incision thank you! Really your tone....was unnecessary...

Thank you WonderDee for the kind support....I seem to think it is because of the moisture since the incision lays under the apron. Curious as yours has seemed to come off the same amount of time out as mine. The nurse told me 5 to 7 days out it will start to come off anyway and by then they are not as concerned with the incision because by then it is starting to heal up. Reading other stories makes me glad its coming off because I would not want it to be stuck on there and giving me a problem...off is better

Geez, way to be rude. First I didn't say you are stupid nor did I imply it. My 'tone' was not condescending or rude in any way, just straight forward.

Second you said you looked on the instructions concerning its affect on dermabond.

I shared the specific info about hibiclens and surgical incision sites because it can seriously damage healing skin.

And seriously, the dermabond coming off after a wk isn't a big problem. That's to be expected. The adhesive weakens from moisture, not because of soap.

Good luck w/ your recovery.

Right...That is exactly what I said!

Yes your tone did come off as exactly that rude and condescending! I did not ask to be educated on the affects of hibeclens on my healing skin but rather its effects on the dermabond! You assumed I was not educated and you assumed I was not using it under the advice of my doctor! I did say I looked on the instructions concerning its affect on dermabond as that was the Question/Topic I was interested in hearing opinions on! Your original answer had nothing to do with my question however your second reply would have been more on topic! Cheers!
