I think the shock has finally kicked in!

I had a appointment with the specialist today to discuss what my options are, and it seems the only one is surgery. I thought I was OK - but now I'm a little upset (and that's the understatement of the year!!). What's a girl to do? I know that logically it's the best option to fix all the problems that I've been having - but now sitting here trying to deal with the reality of the situation it's hit me like a ton of bricks. And to add to the drama of the situation I have to go through the public health system. The waiting list is 6 months at the moment. I really don't think I can wait that long!! Any suggestions on how to deal with the stress? And on top of all that I'm on a strong dose of hormones to help stop the heavy bleeding, and the side effects of them is depression and mood swings.

Re: I think the shock has finally kicked in!

I did not want surgery and avoided for as long as I could but it was the best thing I ever did! I know 6 months is a long time but it will pass by. Hang in there and prayers to you for relief and patience in the present time. Blessings.

Re: I think the shock has finally kicked in!

Hi Rubierose.

I had day surgery last week to try to remove a fibroid(only got 1/3 of it out) that is causing heavy bleeding, anemia. I will probably need more, but I have to wait 3 more months. I waited 3 months for this operation.
This web site is the best support . You will find many others to talk with who are somewhere on their own journey who also remember the day the Dr. said the H word. It is overhwelming. Like the sisters here say, take a deep breath. You didn't mention why you need the operation, or if you have thought about getting a second opinion.
Look around the site for info on hormones. Some of the Ladies here are very well informed and ready to help.
I will be praying for you.

Re: I think the shock has finally kicked in!

I went to my dr for a consult for an ablation, and he recomended a hyst. I have adenomyosis, and the ablation would just prolong the inevitable. It was an agonizing few days while I tried to make the decision about what to do. Once I finally did, a lot of the stress left. Now I am just waiting until my date, and maybe it really hasn't hit me yet, but I believe because I took the time with my decision and researched it along with a 2nd opinion, I am more at piece.

Re: I think the shock has finally kicked in!

Thanks for the messages of support girls! The reason the H word is necessary is I have 2 fibroids - one (5cm) on a stalk which is in danger of twisting and dying, and another (4.5cm) situated at the neck of the cervix. Because of that my uterus is now at the size of a 16 week pregnancy. AND added to the problems the heavy persistant bleeding (which isn't being controlled by hormone therapy) rules out an IUD staying put. Phew! I know I'm not in any way unique with these problems - but it sure helps to let off steam with women going through the same issues.

Re: I think the shock has finally kicked in!

I hope they can get you in sooner than 6 months. I have had to wait for 6 weeks, and that is bad enough. At least I have had time to research and make educated decisions. Please keep us posted!
