Anybody had an LSH?
Hi,
Just wondering if anyone would share their experiences with an LSH. I'll be having everything removed above my cervix.
I've talked to the doctor and done my own research and it seems to be a good fit for my situation - I have never had children and have no indications of cervical cancer in my family.
I was a little "freaked out" when the doctor described how they get the uterus out...something like a mini "roto rooter" is used...I wasn't the only one - my husband went pale and his eyes got really big! The doctor did say that if there was endometriosis or any other condition, I would need a TAH.
Any info would be appreciated!

Anybody had an LSH?
Hello, i have had exactly what you are having done. Today is my 5th day post-op and I feel pretty good. In case you haven't read my message I posted earlier tonite I have pasted a copy of it below. I hope your surgery goes well. Good luck!!
First of alI, I have really enjoyed reading the message boards. I found this web site a couple of weeks before my surgery and it really helped alot. I was a nervous wreck the day of surgery and didn't have an appt with gyn until the day before surgery!!! ( Really busy Doc!)
I was so nervous at that appt but I had already found my list of things to take to hospital and every other question I had answered on this site.
I had been having severe cramps all the time not just every two weeks I bled. Multiple fibroids, blood clots, cysts on ovaries, and adenomyosis for over a yr.
I had a LSH Nov. 22 and can't believe how good it went.
The only other surgeries I have had didn't go so well so I was prepared for the worse.
When I had my tonsils removed I threw up big blood clots and was very sick. My c-section 15 yrs ago didn't go as planned either. To make a long story short had complications from fibroid tumors that grew with my pregnancy. Baby wouldn't come thru birth canal and had to do c-section. Had to be put to sleep, epidural and spinal would not work on me. Dr removed fibroid as large as a grapefruit blocking birth canal. Too dangerous to remove other one. Ended up staying in hospital for 2 extra days due to severe spinal headache.
When I was bought back from my room after LSH, I was fine just really sleepy. Family hugged me goodbye and left. Dr came back in about 6 hrs later and was amazed that I hadn't asked for pain med. I was still groggy from anesthesia and wasn't hurting. Dr couldn't believe it. He told me not to wait too long to ask for meds but I never did.
Next morning i was excited to be getting to go home. Got up by myself and dressed and put on make up. Dr couldn't believe how good I looked and felt!! Neither could I!!!! I was expecting extreme pain and having to be pulled out of bed. Finally after they kept asking if i was sure I didn't want any pain medication, I said ok go ahead since I was sure the pain was going to start anytime, (they had been giving me med in IV can't remember name but it was something like motrin for inflammation.) By the time i got home I was pretty sore and had to wait for family to get meds filled. By then I was getting uncomfortable so I took pain pill.
Hard staying asleep that nite because I had to sleep on my back and I am a side sleeper. Got up the next morning and my neck hurt so bad I could hardly stand it. My stomach wasn't that bad. Worse part was getting up and down. Only other problem I had was trying to urinate after they removed the catherer. I had to sit and wait and wait for it to happen but after 2 days got back to normal and so did neck pain.
Anyway today is day 5 and other than my incisions bothering me somewhat, I am fine. I am taking 800mg motrin 3 times per day but have only taken 3 percocets since i have been home.
Is it going to get worse??! I can't believe I don't feel that bad, just tired sometimes. Well that is my story....sorry so long. Hope that gives hope to anyone else out there that is preparing for LSH, it was a breeze!!

Anybody had an LSH?
Hi Mysteryluvr,
I also had a LSH. I am 18 months post op and I am still very pleased with my surgery results. I had two small hip incisions and a belly button incision.
Here are two links that goes over the LSH surgery:
http://www.laparoscopicsupracervicalhysterectomy.com/
http://www.goodgyn.com/lsh.html
The 2nd link was posted by a fellow LSH sister and I thought it was very informative.
Best wishes,
Mary

Anybody had an LSH?
I too had a LSH, approximately 8 months ago. I have severe endometriosis and was able to have the surgery. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear they weren't able to remove all of the disease because I've recently started having pain again. I had 3 small incisions underneath my navel area and one incision in my belly button. I stayed in the hospital over night, but had very little pain and recovered rather quickly. It did take some time to get my energy back, but that goes with all surgery, so be patient.

Anybody had an LSH?
I had an LSH in May and have not had a drop of blood since- I WALKED out of the hospital 20 hours after the procedure, and drove my car to pick up my dog the next day. I was able to drive regularly about 1 week after the procedure, and returned to work 3 weeks after. It has now been 6 months and I am now very athletic- a typical workout is 4 miles on the treadmill and 60 reps each of 50 pounds on 8 different weight machines...
I had lost 40% of my red blood cells last year before the surgery, so the LSH was a great relief.
You can click on my name and search previous posts, and look back at some of the posts I did back in June to see more info about LSH- I posted a lot about it then.
The "roto-rooter" is called a morcellator, and they cost about $15,000 each. My surgeon said that it isn't too hard to learn how to use, and does allow for very small cuts rather than large ones (two on each hipbone, 1 at the bikini line, and a cut into the belly button, which I can hardly see anymore).
My more recent posts have been about keeping the cervix- you should get tested for a virus called HPV before deciding to keep your cervix. If you don't have HPV, your likelihood of getting cervical cancer is very small, because the relationship of HPV to cervical cancer is similar to that of HIV to AIDS; if you don't have HPV, you are very unlikely to get cervical cancer, and thus are a good candidate to keep your cervix. Also, Merck has just developed a vaccine to prevent 2 of the high-risk strains of HPV, so once the vaccine is available, if you don't currently have HPV, you would be very, very unlikely to get cervical cancer.
Thus, women who don't have HPV are very strong candidates for keeping the cervix, and thus for having an LSH procedure.

Anybody had an LSH?
Hi mysterylvr,
I had a 10 weeks ago today and am very happy with the results.
My surgery was needed for large fibroids. Endo was discovered once inside and one ovary had to go.
My surgery was at 7:30 in the morning and I went home at 3:30. I took 3 1/2 weeks off work but many go back at 2 weeks.
I drank lots of water and walked 2 or 3 times a day, everyday during recovery. I belive that helped me alot. I was able to workout more seriously at about 7 weeks.
This site helped me so much while I was researching and then waiting(pre op).
Best wishes,
kbirds

Anybody had an LSH?
I had a LSH for fibroids and they found some adhesions and so far everything has been great. I posted my surgery experience under Tell your hyst story. I walked alot and drank lots of water. It was done at a surgery center and I was out of there around 6:00pm the same night. Had to go back to work in two weeks. If you are really curious about the procedure you can watch it online at www.or-live.com. They performed it a little different than my dr. but it might give you a pretty good idea what they do (then again may be too much information). Good luck I am sure everything will go great.

Anybody had an LSH
I had an LSH on the 31st of Aug and I have been so amazed at how well I felt afterwards. I told my dr that I had more pain when I got my tubes tied than now. I went into surgery at ten in the morning and was home by five that night. The only problem I had was alot of right shoulder pain. They said that was from the gas. Haven't figured that out yet. I took two weeks off from work and have been back to work full time since. I kept my cerivix and both ovaries since they were good. I have fallen into that 1% of women who get "mini periods". But compared to what I was going thru this is a breeze. Only last about anywhere from two to four days and only use a pantyliner. It was the best decision that I have ever made. Well worth it. I'm sure you will agree. Good luck.

Anybody had an LSH?
Thanks so much for all the responses! I feel alot better after hearing the positive experiences.
At this point, everything above my cervix is coming out. I am amazed that they can get everything out those small incisions!
I go back on December 5th to visit with the doctor and will ask about HPV. I have to look that up because I don't know what it is
Take care,

Anybody had an LSH?
HPV stands for Human Papillovirus. It is very common to have it in your 20's, but it usually goes away shortly, and it is only the highly persistant strains that last for 10+ years that have been shown to cause cervical cancer.
Thus, if you are scheduled to return to the doctor on Dec. 5th, you might call the doctor's office and request to have a lab test for high risk strains of HPV. If they come back negative, then keeping the cervix by having an LSH will be very low risk in terms of any later chance of cervical cancer.
Here's the HPV statement from the Netherlands:
A distinction is made between high-risk HPV types (16, 18) and low-risk HPV types (e.g., 6/11, 42, 43, and 44).1
The low-risk HPV types 6 and 11 are associated with
genital warts.
The results of studies of the relationship between high-risk HPV types 16, 18, 31, 33, and 35 and the prevalence of endocervical intraepithelial neoplasia or cervical carcinoma in situ are unequivocal.
Specifically, HPV type 16 is often found in such association and has the strongest connection to cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN).
Genital warts in women do not appear to indicate an elevated risk of genital carcinomas.
