NovaSure or Hysterectomy

I am in search of some input. 2004 I was bleeding heavily and almost hemorraghed to death. My GYN gave me two options Thermal Choice Ablation or Hysterectomy. I choose the Ablation,stopped all bleeding for 18 months, now 2006 my periods are lighter but the cramps and are unbearable. My fibroids have now grown and i have adenomyosis. Prior to this in the early 90's I have cyst removed from both ovaries and abunant amount of scar tissuse remove. I have a new GYN who has once again given me two options NovaSure or Hysterectomy.
Having tried the Ablation previously and hormones, I am leaning toward the hysterectomy. Along with all the cramping during my cycle prior is the discharge and frequent BV associated with the vaginal inbalance.

Any thought on which way to proceed?

I higly recommend researching both options before making your decision. The ablation was affective for you for a period of time, so it might be worth trying again. Have you had an opportunity to checkout NovaSure's website?

A hyst is a major, irreversible surgery so the decision to have one should not be made lightly. There are pros and cons to having a hyst, and there can be complications. It is not always a "cure all" so to speak.

I have researched both options and that is why I choose the Ablation previously. I see you had a hysterectomy early in life. I am 41 now and have been GYN of some type since early 90's. Do you regret the choice you made?

I did not have a choice about having a hyst actually. Because I was so young, my GYN did not even want to do my hyst except that he performed my lap prior to my hyst and he saw with his own eyes that I had no choice. I had exhausted all the options available and a hyst was inevitable. However, I had done my research, I had sought other opinions, and my DH and I discussed everything so I was at peace with my decision when I made it.

That said, do I regret having a hyst? No. Did it cure me? No. Did I have complications? Yes. I was down for 6 months. I acquired a neuro, cardiologists, allergist, an unbelievable amount of tests and medical bills, and I deal with health issues now that I never dealt with prior to my hyst. Do I feel wonderful 6 years later? No. I have never been the same since my hyst. Becasue my system hit rock bottom after my hyst due to the complications, I have never had the stamina, energy, or health I once had. I have never been able to fully build back up again. So at the age of 31, I feel much older physically.

This is why I urge women to make sure the hyst is the best choice for them. I personally know women, and there are women on the site, who have done very well after their hyst, no complications, no problems, and they are still fine today. Once they recover they are able to enjoy a quality of life they have not had. But my story is different, and there are also women on the site who completely regret their hyst. I will say I am glad I at least no longer have to worry about unending heavy bleeding!

As I said, I had no choice, and it was the right decision for me. It just wasn't a "happily ever after" story in my case.

Does this help? My hyst was for endo, so you and I do have completely different health issues. However, anyone can have surgical complications.

Make the right choice for you, which in deed may be a hyst. You have done research, you have tried an option. Only you can decide what the next step should be. You have to weigh the pros and cons of each choice for yourself.

One thing that did help me was to sit down with my family dr and talk to her about everything. I knew she was not a surgeon, she would not push me into anything because of her particular skills, but she could give me a medical opinion based on my overall health and knowing me. I may be sitting down with her again in the near future.
