Catheter Placemnt With Bladder Lift

I am having a TVH with A & P repairs. My doctor is conservative and says that the catheter comes out of the bladder directly thru the abdomen rather than the urinary tract area. He says that he has experienced less chance of infection from having to recatheterize. Has anyone heard of this and is this the standard way to do it or is it wierd? The cath is supposed to come out about 5 days after surgery.

Hi Natalie, your doctor is right...It's called a "supra-pubic catheter" that goes thru your abdomen, above your pubic bone, into your bladder....it allows you to "practise pee" after your bladder repair... there is much less chance of infection and it comes out when your bladder is working fully...I had mine for 2 days. So, when I read that all these sisters are having painful urination and trouble retraining themselves to urinate, will I still have to go thru that or is that much easier then?
Thanks for your guidance!

Catheter Placemnt With Bladder Lift

It took me a few hours to retrain my bladder to empty fully. They would clamp the catheter and then measure the residual after I tried to empty my bladder. After I was able to empty 3 times in a row they took out the stitches that held the catheter in and removed it. There is much less chance of infection becuz you are not continually being recatheterized via the urethra. Your bladder function will return at it's own pace...your doctor is estimating 5 days. It is much easier this way! Grace
