Will I be able to do it?

Okay, so I know this sounds silly...but snowboarding season is right around the corner and I am desperatly hoping that I'll be able to participate. I am an avid snowboarder and spent the 2005 season out due to a broken arm. I cannot bear the thought of missing another season!
Any ideas if I'll be able to participate in such activities? I'm also in kickboxing and feel like all my "fun" has been ripped away. Thank goodness I can still scrapbook!!

Will I be able to do it?

An excellent question for your Dr. Just remember that it takes months to heal the inside and if the Dr. suggests you sit this season out, it will be time well spent insuring your health for the rest of your life. My son got the ok from his Dr. just 10 days after appendix surgery to go back to his skateboarding, rock climbing and all his craziness and has done OK. But you've had more than a lap appy!

Will I be able to do it?

Hi Kim
I see you are going on your fifth week out from surgery. I'm not sure when your season begins out there, but it seems like you have a good chance of being healed up. Freespirit is right that you're going to need the ok from your dr and from your body. Everyone heals differently so you're going to have to see how you do.

I had exercised diligently for years, but had a diffucult time getting back into doing what I had been doing previously. Kickboxing was one I just couldn't do. I hurt so badly everytime I tried. My dr sent me to a physical therapist who helped me get to where I could do most of what I wanted to be doing.

I would highly recommend that you begin walking if you aren't already. I used to do kick boxing too and have done a tiny bit of snowboarding. Enough to know they are both very strenuous. If you're anything like me you will probably be thinking that walking is for babies, in comparison to what you are used to doing. What I learned was that it gave me great insight into where I was in the whole process of being healed.

If you start I would bet that you will be amazed at how tired you get. Listen to your body, and don't push yourself past that point, go rest when you're tired and begin to hurt. When you get to where you can walk several blocks without hurting or being exhausted you'll know you are getting closer to being able do the more active things you want to do, safely. You will be building strength and endurance too.

You have to start somewhere and this is the safe way you can begin today to get your body ready. The extra surgery you had done could slow you down some more, you're just going to have to try and see. You're going to have to rebuild some strength in your abdominals too. Once you are cleared by your dr you can try some more things, a little at a time, build up the the hard stuff gradually. I hope you succeed and can enjoy the snow season. You still have some time, don't push it.
's, Rita
