What causes spotting?
I am starting my third week and still slightly spotting.
It's a transparent pinkish brownish color.
I was told for 3 weeks it was normal.
I am starting to hope it ENDS SOON, cause I only have one week to go before it's "not normal".
What can be the causes of extended slight spotting?

Re: What causes spotting?
3 weeks is a general rule and not written in stone. As long as it is a slight spotting you should be okay. It also depends on what type of hysterectomy you had, if the cervix was left and if the ovaries were also left.
It may take longer for some internal sutures to dissolve.
Just make sure you are not doing to much.
If the spotting increases or changes to a bright red call your doctor.

Re: What causes spotting?
Ya... I had abdominal hysterecotmy, kept my ovaries but could not keep the cervix.
The spotting is very very slight, and they did tell me that it was to be expected for 3 weeks.
But I am not doing too much I think... I am just afraid of what it could mean in terms of complications if it does not stop...

Did the doctor say anything about it?

Re: What causes spotting?
I go back for my 12 week post op on aug 18th. I know spotting can last and know of others who have had it for 12+ weeks and nothing was wrong. Just the healing...

Re: What causes spotting?
Yes I know, I keep reading on and on about people who are spotting way beyond the 3 weeks my doctor talked about.
If it's just spotting, can it be anything more than healing? Have you ever heard of any other scenario that explained it?

Re: What causes spotting?
I had a TAH but they took everything so my spotting was minimal and gone after 4 weeks.
Besides the normal healing the extended spotting can be from the ovaries trying to regulate themselves. If you are on HRT it can also be from your body trying to regulate itself.
If you are still spotting when you go for your check up discuss it with your doctor. If he says it is normal healing make him explain to you what is going on inside your body to cause it.
For example: I have this little pouch on the left side of my incision by the belly button and was concerned about it. I learned at my 8 wk checkup that I was cut an extra 3 inches internally and what I'm seeing is bunching of the abdominal cavity that is sewn together. It will take 2-3 more months for those internal sutures to heal and then that area will flatten out. I also may see some discharge when those sutures start to dissolve. Knowing this little bit of information also answered a few other questions I had, like why my appetite still isn't back and why when I do eat a small meal I feel over full for many hours after.
Initial healing takes 8-12 wks and then final healing takes 6-12 months. Think of final healing phase as internal physical therapy.
Hope this helps

Re: What causes spotting?
Cjj, what was the reasoning for the appetite and feeling full? I'm the same way.
As for spotting, I was told to expect it for up to six weeks. I'm about 3 1/2 weeks now and haven't seen it in about a week. But won't be shocked if I see it again.

Re: What causes spotting?
I had abdominal, I kept my ovaries, but they had to take the cervix, which means that my bleeding can only really come for that cavity, or am I wrong? That is actually what I am trying to understand...
I am understanding that they make some sort of pounch at the end of the vagina... So what else could be bleeding right?
Please tell me if I am understanding well...
