Hysterectomy or Depo shot!
Hi Everyone,
I am new to this site, and not sure how to begin. I have had many problems with abnormal uterine bleading. I bled for 22 days last month. My dr. attempted to do a D&C, but my cervix was so tite and when he tried to go in, it when completely through the other side of my uterus. He looked on the inside of me by laproscopy surgery, and didn't find any fibroids or anything else wrong. Seems my problem must be in the uterus itself. My options were either the depo shot, or hysterectomy. I know a lot of people who got that shot, and it made them bleed all the time. I know that for some women that take the shot have no bleeding at all. But I already have so much trouble with bleeding I'm not sure I want to try something that could make it worse. I have not been pad free since March 18th. My uterus is also very tender when my dr. tries to do a exam on me and sometimes during sex, he says that the shot probably won't help my pain, but could control the bleeding. So what do you think, should I try the shot, or just go for the hysterectomy? I know I am tired of living like this, I can't plan anything, I never know when I may start, or how long I may go. My periods are so painful and heavy I feel like a prisoner locked in my home. Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Brenda

Hysterectomy or Depo shot!
I don't know much about your specific problem but I have been on Depo. I complained of awful, and I mean awful periods ect. to my Gyn and she suggested Depo since I am done having kids and don't want to get pregnant. I had spotted, break through bleeding for about 6 months, but after that I didn't bleed for almost 5 years on it. Then I started having problems and now they think I have endo. I also know what you mean about just wanting your life back. I am in that situation now. I am on Lupron and trying to decide if I should do more treatment, they want me to go back on Depo after the Lupron, or just have it all taken out. The surgery scares the daylights out of me, and the recovery is so long, or I would sign on for it now. Also, I have heard that after quiting the Depo it can take up to a year or so to concieve if you are thinking of that at all.
Good Luck,
Missy

Hysterectomy or Depo shot!
HI,
If you at least try the Depo and it does not work, you will still have the other option available to you. If the Depo does work, you will have avoided a major surgery and lengthy recovery. Trying the Depo will also give you time to look into further options that may not have been presented to you yet. This will also provide some time to research the different types of surgeries and recovery times, should you need to use this option in the future.
It is not an easy choice to make. I know what it is like to feel as if you are a prisoner to your menstrual cycle. I tried many different options over the years. Things started getting worse about 4 months prior to my surgery. I underwent many tests to find out what was going on. Adenomyosis was suspected, and confirmed after my surgery. I used that entire 4 months to gather as much information as I could before undergoing a hyst. I wanted to make sure that this was the right choice. Should my recovery been anything other than smooth, I would have been very upset with myself for not exhausting all other options first.
Good luck in your decision making process.

Hysterectomy or Depo shot!
I have also have been dealing with irregular bleeding and now big time fibroids. I was given the depo shot end of Jan. it worked for 6 weeks, so my Dr. gave me another it worked 5 days. I have been bleeding ever since. The fibroids grew really fast, from Jan. when I had my annual exam to end of Feb. I sometimes wonder if the depo had anything to do with it. I am scheduled for a hyst. May 15th.
The thing that worried me about the depo was weight gain. I work out everyday and I felt I was getting fatter. Of course now I know that fibroids can make you your stomach expand so you look 5 mo. pregnant.
But back to the depo. Some women on the website: www.menapauseonlinebulletinboard.com (this is a good site for many symptoms and alternatives for menopause) that had the depo shots and put on 10-20 lbs. Maybe Missie can fill us in on that part.
I don't know if this info helps but good luck!
Marian
P.S. My Dr. put me on Ponstel which is an anti-inflammatory to help stop the intense cramping and slow the bleeding. It has helped slow down the bleeding especially if I don't do anything to strenuous. We went to 4 pharmacies before one had any. One of the pharmacists called my Dr. and asked if she would change to another anti-inflammatory and she said"no!" I had to have this one to work properly.
So ask your Dr. It is really supposed to be used just before and during periods. But she has me on it until my surgery.

Depo...
I've been on Zoladex, Depo_provera, danocrine, synaryl and others...
I can only speak from my experience, but Depo-provera didn't make me gain any weight. I actually lost weight while on it.

Hysterectomy or Depo shot!
I've heard of Depo Provera, and Depo Lupron - I don't know anything about either one, but be sure you find out which you're talking about.
If you haven't already, ask your doctor what's the best result you could have from the shot - the answer might help you decide. For instance, could it "possibly reduce bleeding somewhat, for as long as you continue with the shots", or "almost certainly stop bleeding", or "it's only effective for a year or two", etc.
How often would you have to have the shots? What are the potential side effects? Are you likely to need a hyst anyway at some point? Just some things to consider - you don't need to answer.
Good luck!

weight gain
I didn't gain any weight due to the depo. Although I found it harder to loose any weight. When I was on depo I excersised regularly and didn't loose or gain. I still excersise and went off depo and lost weight. Don't know, but I think it had something to do with it.

Hysterectomy or Depo shot!
I have had both Depo Provera and Depot Lupron and neither one stopped any of my bleeding. Provera made me gain 10 lbs in about a month and gave me incredible headaches. I didn't take another shot. Lupron gave me a total of 3 hot flashes (I only had one shot -- good for 30 days) but didn't stop the bleeding either. My hyst has been the only relief for me and oh, what a relief it is!
Good Luck!
