Bowel prep - magnesium citrate
I had my pre-op today. They gave me one bottle of magnesium citrate for my bowel prep on Monday. Any tips on using it? How much time does one have to plan to be near the bathroom?

Bowel prep - magnesium citrate
Did you get instructions with the magcitrate? I had to drink it over about a half hour or so, then starting about 45 minutes later, had to spend most of the next 6 hours close to the bathroom, with frequent trips after that. My DR's nurse told me I should plan on not going to work because I would be spending more time in the bathroom than anywhere else. She was right.
Good luck.

Bowel prep - magnesium citrate
I didnt have a bowel prep for my hyster but have had to do plenty in the past. I typically mix mine with sprite. And just a little mag cit at a time. And then, plant yourself on the potty and wait for the fun, LOL. Oh, if you can, i suggest getting some baby wipes. They are soothing after repeated bm's. For me also, I have NEVER finished a bottle of the mag cit. It is just too harsh on my stomach. A little goes a LOOOOOOOOONG way. Oh!! And eat VERY light the 24 hours prior to taking it. YOu will thank me later for that advice

Bowel prep - magnesium citrate
I have used this before and I have found that keeping it refrigerated helps with the taste. I've had to drink the entire bottle and found that if I just chugged smaller portions instead is sipping it was easier than trying to drink the entire bottle at one time. Also, just keep in mind that you have to keep hydrated, so drink up!
Stay close to the bathroom because once it starts working the urge will be immediate and there will be no room for hesitation. I would also recommend having some moist bathroom wipes and/or hemrroid cream on hand just in case you get irritated.
Good luck. I start mine on Wednesday.

Bowel prep - magnesium citrate
I drank mine in a very short period of time. It takes several hours to be done with the many trips that you will take to the bathroom, so I would suggest starting it fairly early in the afternoon so that you have a better chance at falling asleep the night before your surgery.

The length of time it takes for the prep to be effective can vary. The last time I did a prep is was 6 hours before I started. But in the past less than an hour. Once started takes about 5+ hours to get over the rush.
It is a good idea not to have any plans once you start the prep.
In the past couple of weeks there has been a few threads for bowel prep. Look them up they may be helpful.
Have fun

Bowel prep - magnesium citrate
The last time I did a bowel prep (for a colonoscopy) I was all ready for it to take effect pretty quickly. The bottle said it would take 1-6 hours to work... and I waited five long hours for anything to happen.
Once it started working, everything was "over" in just a couple of hours. Not terribly comfortable, but I've been worse.
Overall I'd say allow a half day or so you're not rushed or uncomfortable. I know one woman who actually moved her TV so that she could see it from the potty!!! Not sure I'd go that far, though.
to you.

Bowel prep - magnesium citrate
Thanks for all your suggestions. I will only work half a day on Monday and then go home and do the bowel prep in the afternoon. How does one know when it is all over?

Bowel prep - magnesium citrate
I had my mag citrate bowel prep on Monday, dec. 29. I was told later I should have refrigerated it before using it. I did not work that day because I was prepare for the s--- storm that was going to follow, which did. I began taking the mag citrate at 3:00 pm and finished by 3:30. I started BMs at about 4:30 and didn't finish until the next morning at 6:45 am, right before they wheeled me off for my surgery! Hopefully yours won't be that bad, but I seriously had bubbles and diarrhea for 10 hours. It was miserable. You will know that it is over when the bubbles and diarrhea subside for at least 3 hours. Good luck!

Oh my goodness. I'm sorry yours was so bad. I sure hope mine gets through the system quicker. I did put the bottle in the refrigerator.
