LAVH, anyone go home same day as surgery?

Hello. I am having a LAVH w/RSO on June 7th. (all sorts of issues) When my doc's scheduler called me to schedule the surgery, she told me that my doc does this as outpatient, and that unless there are complications, I will go home that same day. Has anyone ever gone home same day? In a way I'm happy with that since there is no such thing as resting in a hospital. lol But at the same time, I think about what if something happens or I can't control my pain with what was prescribed? We live ~45 minutes from my doc and the hospital this will be done at. Maybe I'm just thinking too much about this.

I was in at 7 and home by 7. I was happy to go home same day, but my doc did give me the option of staying the night if I wanted to. In order to leave I had to be able to pee, walk, keep down solid food, and have my pain under control with oral meds. I did rest a lot better at home than at the hospital.

Re: LAVH, anyone go home same day as surgery?

I got really worried as well when I got a call from the hospital finance people telling me it was listed as outpatient and then the next day got a call reminding me of surgery time, check-in time, and restrictions and she said I would be going home that same day. I immediately called my doctor on his cell phone and asked him what they were talking about. My doctor gave me the choice but he said only about 5% of his patients choose to go home same day. I don't know where you are located but all over my hospital there were signs saying that if you felt you were being discharged too soon to contact this certain department before you left the hospital. I wouldn't worry too much about this. I am sure the doctor and staff will abide by your wishes to stay the night if that is what you want and need. Good luck.

PS. I wasn't even allowed out of recovery and into my room because they couldn't get my pain under control. They want you comfortable, so you shouldn't worry about that if you can help it.

Re: LAVH, anyone go home same day as surgery?

My dr is calling mine "outpatient, overnight". Sounded like a conflict to me They said that means I have surgery, will stay overnight but will be released the next day if all is well.

Someone on here told me 'outpatient overnight' meant you are there less than 24 hours.

Re: LAVH, anyone go home same day as surgery?

I stayed overnight, but my surgery was very late and I wasn't in my room until 10:00pm. I was up and walking a couple of hours after that. I was released at 2:30 the next day, but honestly, I was awake almost all night playing games on my phone, I think I spent about two hours trying to describe in this thread my experience, but it was that hard to do! I didn't realize I was so medicated until I read some messages I wrote on Facebook later! I was definitely ready to go home sooner than I was, I was bugging everyone.

I live 40 minutes from the hospital as well, and that's the only reason they kept me that long my doctor told me - because it would be a long drive back if something went wrong, but that is more than enough time to know how you're doing. When I woke up in recovery, from what I remember, I was surprised I wasn't screaming in pain from some of the stories on here that you'll occasionally read and scare you to death! Do you know what I thought when I woke up? The pain I felt was still diarrhea cramps from the laxatives the day before and tried to fight the guy to get out of the bed before I crapped the table and myself! Does that really sound SO horrible?

To be fair, it's major surgery, and recovery since the hospital is not quick and takes patience, but my experience is that I would have liked to have gone home the same day.

Re: LAVH, anyone go home same day as surgery?

Thank you for all your input! My surgery is scheduled for 8:30 am on a Friday. Knowing how I reacted to my d&c in September (m/c) and my laparoscopy in March, I'm fairly sure it won't be pretty. I woke up with excruciating pain both of those times and it took them a while to get my pain under control. This should be interesting. Part of me does want to stay, mainly for the fact that it's going into the weekend and should something happen, I'm already there and won't have to bother my doc. But at the same time, having had a c/s and been in the hospital for 4 days w/that, I know how little rest you actually get. At least at home I can rest uninterrupted with nobody needing to take blood or any vitals at all hours of the night.

My doctor told me that I would be staying overnight. I'm okay with that, for now.. lol I may be ready to go home sooner though, like others who rest better at home. I think my doctor's main concern was keeping pain under control, and I think she just usually keeps hysterectomy patients overnight..

I was in at 6 and home by 7. I was actually ready to go by then, but everyone reacts differently. Good luck to you

Re: LAVH, anyone go home same day as surgery?

I was really glad for my night in the hospital, and so was hubby. Really missed that automated hospital bed once I got home! It was great to be home but one night in hospital was good. (BTW I was told it would be outpatient also- somethig about 23 hours maximum for insurance reasons? then in my Pre-op they said otherwise...I even had the option to stay 2 nights. Ask your doc if you are concerned at all)
