Cold Medicine before surgery

First let me say that I am going to call my dr.'s office but I'm wondering if I can take cold medicine 11 days out from surgery. I'm usually pretty good at fighting off the bugs, but this one's getting me.

Instead of resting and preparing myself for surgery, I'm burning the candle at both ends as they say. My dh had hernia surgery on Thursday and between taking care of everything at home and trying to get everything done at work I've come down with a cold.

The scheduling nurse told me no Motrin two weeks prior so I'm thinking cold medicine in probably out. I've been sucking on cold-eze and dring water but it doesn't seem to be helping fast enough.

Just wondering if anyone knows the rules on this.....it probably varies dr. to dr. but it never hurts to ask.

Thanks

Cold Medicine before surgery

The reason for no Motrin is that ibuprofen can cause bleeding and increases the risk for bleedingduring surgery. I don't know what type of cold medicine you are planning to take, but some of them contain ibuprofen. In general, cold medication 11 days prior to surgery won't cause a problem but you need to tell your doctor specifically what you are taking.

Definitely give the nurse at your doctor's office a call. I too had a cold just before surgery and was told I could take sudafed and tylenol. Good luck. Try to rest and relax whenever possible. Too much stress probably caused you to get the cold in the first place.

I was told tylenol is ok as is your decongestants and anti-histamines. NO ASPRIN OR IBUPROPHEN.
