Hysterosopcy or TAH?

I recently had an ultrasound and hysterosonogram which shows a polyp in the uterus. No other big problems - had some spotting for a while and since I am well through menopause they decided to look into what was causing it.

My doctor has gone into great detail about options etc., and although I had a failed hsyteroscopy with another doctor (he could not dilate my cervix), my new doctor is recommending another try at Hysteroscopy with medication before the surgery to help the dilation of the cervix. She said she will do an ablation and biopsy at the same time.

She also said if she cannot dilate the cervix she will go straight to the hysterectomy taking the ovaries too - maybe the bikini cut as I have had no children. I feel ok with the hysteroscopy, but now I am getting input from a lot of acquaintanes that say just have the whole thing done and get it over with. Anyone been in this situation? would like to know if anyone has had a successful hsyteroscopy and then no more problems. I don't have any fibroids or any other issues as far as they can tell.

I have been reading all the messages from this site and have appreciated the input from so many.

Hysterosopcy or TAH?

Hi Wendy - you don't mention how old you are but if you are in menopause I'll take a guess that you're over 40. Anyway I'm 56 and am still in perimenopause. I've had two D & Cs and 5 endometrial biopsies because of irregular bleeding. I've been diagnosed with hyperplasia (an overgrowth of the uterine lining) but with no atypical cells. I've been advised to have a hysterectomy but I don't feel I need one at this point.

Have you had an endometrial biopsy (which I quess you haven't) to rule out uterine cancer? Any bleeding after menopause is cause for concern.

With my first D & C at which time I also had a hysterscope (under general anesthesia) the doctor found 8-10 polys which she removed and I was put on medication to control the build up of the lining.

I then switched gyns and had my second D & C and hysterscope in March (again under general anesthesia) and this time there were no polyps. It's now 2 months since the D & C and I'm having my first "regular" period in a long time. The doctor has to watch me carefully (with periodic biopsies) to make sure the lining does not turn atypical (precursor to cancer) if I want to avoid a hysterectomy.

I guess I don't understand why your doctor hasn't tried to do a biopsy and suggested go right to hysterectomy (unless that is what you want).

Good luck in your decision. Please keep us posted. When is your next doctor's appt?

Hysterosopcy or TAH?

Hi Mary

We did talk about the endometrial biopsy, but she decided to do that at the same time she is doing the hsyteroscopy which is next week. I am fine with the lesser procedure, just was getting a little hesitant when a few people said go for the hysterectomy.

Thanks for your input - I may mention that to her when I see her Tuesday.
