hysterectomy for prevention of cancer???

I struggled with this one...alot. I was scheduled almost from day 1 to have a hysterectomy because of the cervical cancer issue, and at first I was all gun-** and yeah take everything out etc etc..

Then I talked to the DR and my husband, both who leaned on the side of caution regarding my ovaries.

Ovaries play such an important role in well-being and aging, and emotions etc. and almost immediately I would have to be put on a HRT, which hopefully would mimic my real ovaries. There's nothing like the real thing.

In the end I choose to take the chance and keep my ovaries, DR removed EVERYTHING else, cervix,utreus,tubes..
I think if I do not have cancer there yet, that I'd rather attempt to go through natural menopause and things.

If I had a history of Ovar cancer then I would have thought harder about it, but I don't and I just can save myself the emotional impact of removing them..

hysterectomy for prevention of cancer???

well I went back to the Dr today and have decided to go ahead with the surgery. I am going to have everything out. The risk is just too great for me to try to keep my ovaries. The nurse will be calling me and it will be scheduled for sometime in July or August.

hysterectomy for prevention of cancer???

I am going to have a tah the end of July. I am going to have it all out too. My mother had uterine cancer, that later came back in her stomach. She died shortly after. My good friend also is in for another battle from ovarian cancer. She had breast cancer also. Now they think it is back in her stomach. So I choose to get rid of anything I won't be needing! We can live without these parts, maybe it will be uncomfortable. But at least we are alive. They don't call ovarian cancer the "silent killer" for nothing. Good luck to all....

hysterectomy for prevention of cancer???

Best wishes to all of you on your surgeries, past or future. I was diagnosed with the BRCA 2 mutation and was advised to have the hysterectomy with everything removed for cancer prevention since ovarian cancer is not usually diagnosed until the advanced stages. Breast cancer is easier to detect so for now I am not having a double masectomy, although I agree with the previous post of loving the idea to remove the 38D and having a perkier set that will have clothes fit better.
This site is so informative.......great resource for sharing and learning.
