Cough/cold just before surgery

Hi all,

I am due my hysterectomy on 26th and for the last 10 days I've had a really bad cold and cough. I rarely get colds and if I do I shake them off within a couple of days so I am so annoyed that this one seems to want to stay. I know a few people with similar symptoms and their coughs have been lasting weeks

Does anyone know what will happen if I still have a mild cough - will they cancel my surgery?

Can anyone recommend anything to speed up recovery other than lots of vit C??

Thanks

Sans

Re: Cough/cold just before surgery

Hi Sans,

Do you have a fever? Generally speaking, as long as you don't have a fever you should be ok. You will pre-op antibiotics, so if you have something bacterial it will probably helped out with that. Have the other symptoms - runny nose etc gone away? You should call your surgeons office, they may order you a Z-Pack just to be safe, you still have time. Sometimes the stress of an upcoming procedure can tax your immune system and make things last. Try to relax Good Luck! I hope you get to feeling better.

Re: Cough/cold just before surgery

Hopefully by the 26 th you will be fine but be sure to let your doc know of any meds you are taking. You don't say what type of surgery you are having but being inverted would not be a good thing if fluids are running down your nasal passages .. Then again any intubation with fluids or phlegm is not good so it would be up to your doc to decide what is best for you. Stay warm and dry, keep away from people you don't need to be near, wash hands frequently etc

Re: Cough/cold just before surgery

I agree with the others that say call your doctor tomorrow. They might be able to give you something or maybe even change your date.

I have the same fears. I'll be flying home from a cruise 4 days before my surgery. I'm so worried I'm going to pick something up on the ship or the plane and my surgery will get cancelled.

Please let us know how it turns out, OK? *hugs*
