fibroids
Hi
I had my hyst in dec 2004 due to servere anemia and a rather large fibroid which was the size of a new born baby. I put my surgery off for 12 months which now was a silly thing to do. In that 12 months I was on iron tablets and tablets to help reduce the heavy bleeding each month. I would have a period for 7 days only and they were that heavy I would have to wear 2 over night pads for the first three days. Then I had to have 4 units of blood and the DR sent me to a specialist and He told me surgery next week but I put it off for another month till the grandchildren were home for the school holidays and I did not have much running around to do.
The best thing that I had done was the surgery. I have not looked back. As I had an hormone implant when I had the surgery I have gained a few pounds which worries me.

I toughed it out for over ten years and it was okay
I was first diagnosed with fibroids at age 39, but other than heavy, crampy, but manageable periods and mid-month spotting, all was okay for ten years. I did triathlons and long bike rides and really had no problems. In fact, my cramps would go away when I exercised. Then about five years ago I started having a lot of back pain. It seemed to be related to my cycle, but my doctor then said it was from a back injury and I really just had to live with it. I now know it was the beginning of the problems that have brought me to a hyster now, but I just toughed that out too. My point is that I am not at all sorry that I just ignored the fibroid stuff for ten years. I do wish I had looked into it more when I started to have a lot of pain five years ago. I hope toughing it out works for you too. Sometimes that is the best way to go. P.S. I know several women who are triathletes who say that they were better athletes after they recovered from their hysterectomies (on average about six months to a year).

MINOR surgery
I had a hysteroscopy today (sans the D&C part of the procedure...but it did make me bleed a good bit) and the doctor said a hysterocopic resection would make a world of difference.
He told me that I had 3 submucosal fibroids that were causing the bleeding (a "handball", a "golfball", and a "marble") and 11 tiny asymptomatic intramural ones. Oh, and then there's the little pedunculated one. (my fibroid family.)
(I didn't mention this before but the dr who conducted the ultra sound said I had HUNDREDS of fibroids!)
MRI's are SO much more accurate than the ultra sound!
I will be scheduling surgery soon. I start a new job on Monday so I'll have to wait a little....hopefully, not much longer than a couple of BCP cycles. Not happy about that but glad to have some gainful employment and a wonderful doctor!
No more "waiting and seeing" for me!

UAE?
Did your doctor mention the uterine artery embolization procedure as an option for you? I have fibroids and have been thinking about this. Most gyn's don't favor it (because THEY don't do it, a radiologist does) but the opinion of the women who've had it seems overwhelmingly favorable! I subscribed to the Yahoo newsgroup EMBO and it's very interesting reading the posts of women who have had or may get this procedure.
