scared and want to know what to expect

What is it like being put to sleep? What can I expect during recovery? Will I need help after surgery?

Re: scared and want to know what to expect

Being put under isn't bad actually. I've had three laparoscopies and one hysterectomy and my anxiety was pretty high with the hysterectomy. My anesthesiologist gave me a med to calm my nerves before he put me out. It was kind of peaceful and easy... Recovery is a blur for me. The recovery nurse will definitely make sure your pain is managed before sending you to your room with your family, and Atleast mine was quite nice and caring. She gave me a lot of meds because I was in so much pain, then jokingly made me promise to keep breathing since she gave me so much. You will definitely need help after surgery. You need to let your body heal and sleep and relaxing is crucial! Don't over do it and just pamper yourself. Heat pads and ice packs help me. I am three days out of a da vinci hysterectomy with removal of my uterus and left ovary. The couch and pillows are my best friend. My family is a huge help as well. I am 24 and have a three year old and she is staying with my parents Atleast for the first week. My husband has helped with even bathing and getting dressed! He has been my rock through everything. The sisters here are also he to help you and give you advice. And believe me, their advice is heavenly. Best of luck!

Re: scared and want to know what to expect

I'm getting the laparoscopic hysterectomy. My doctor who will be doing this said he has been doing hysterectomies for 14 years and said its a pretty safe procedure. I just want to get it done and over with so I can stop stressing about it. Thank you so much

Re: scared and want to know what to expect

No worries... It is a relatively safe procedure. Much more so than a full abdominal surgery. Wish you the best of luck! If you go to the hyster sisters store they have a 'tummy binder' and I just bought one but they are supposed to be amazing and help with sleeping and swelling and such. Something to look in to

Having the DaVinci this Friday the 24th..

I'm scared too..I do not like being put out and have anxiety already about it all. I also don't like anyone to fuss over me but I will have to let people help me.

Re: scared and want to know what to expect

You will both be fine the worst part is the waiting and wondering what is going to happen when you are put to sleep it only takes about 6 seconds they put a drip in your hand and you are away with the fairies, its a wonderful feeling when you are just coming round , I can remember shivering, but I felt very calm and you will not be in pain because the nurses will make sure of that for you good luck....

I had the da vinci on Friday. I psyched myself out about it. I was so worried! I tried to hide it but once the got me on machines and saw my blood pressure and such... Dead give away. Moving into the or I was shaking so bad! My anesthesiologist was amazing, he gave me meds to help with my nerves and you can ask for the same. Just be honest about what your feeling and I'm sure they will help

Re: scared and want to know what to expect

Its a good thing they have this website to help us support each other. I understand your feeling. I have talked to lots of women who have had hysterectomies and said its no big deal. Its scary for me because I have never had surgery before in my life.
