Will I still have PMS

So, I found out last week I need to have a hysterectomy. I have rushed to get as much info as possible, because my surgery is Friday, Nov. 13th. I've never thought about menopause, I guess because I wasn't there yet in life, and now I'm being rushed to figure all of this out. Please forgive what might sound like ignorance...

I am keeping my ovaries. Does that mean I will still have all of the same symptoms I always did during my period, obviously minus the bleeding? I had really bad PMS 2 days prior to my period. I'd get acne, and sore boobs. Will I still have all of this?

I can't believe I forgot to ask my doctor this along with the 50 other questions I had written down for her.

Re: Will I still have PMS

hello friend I am having surgery on the same day as you, LAVH. as for the pms, I am thinking you might still have some of the symptoms as before, they might seem less because you wont bleed and have the cramps, well at least thats what I think since I have not had the surgery yet I dont know for sure, but in keeping your ovaries you will still have the hormones so it probably will be close to the same. Sorry I wasnt more help!

Re: Will I still have PMS

Interesting question!

I found that my pms symptoms nearly disappeared after my TAH. I still get some breast tenderness, and I can feel myself ovulate, but that's about it. I don't retain water anymore and I don't have strange food cravings like I used to have.

I used to have lots of PMS-type symptoms, but now I really think most of the discomfort and even the mood swings were just from the bloated feelings surrounding my uterus filling with blood each month.

I still have pms symptoms.....moodiness, sore breasts, ect....some months are less, some are more. I guess it just depends on the individual. Hopefully yours will lesson or go away completely.

Re: Will I still have PMS

I used to have horrible PMS and cycles, I am almost at a year after my TAH and No, I do not have it. No strange cravings, no cramps, no bloating, no pain, I still have 1 whole and 15% of the other ovarie. Every once in a while I get a lil twinge, and I look and realize that It would be that time, guess I will be ovulating. But other then that, no problems.

Good luck to you, the more information you have the better you will be

Re: Will I still have PMS

My PMS actually worsened following my surgery because I stopped using birth control pills to manage my cycles! I have noticed over the last couple years that overall my symptoms are lessening but I can still have sore, swollen breasts, bloating, cravings, moodiness, the whole nine yards!

If you do end up with issues with PMS following your hysterectomy, talk to your doctor about your options. Mine included natural progesterone cream or low dose birth control pills.

Re: Will I still have PMS

Thanks everyone! Hopefully the PMS will lessen or go away.

I'm really nervous. I guess it doesn't help that my surgery is Friday the 13th. Just my luck....

Is it possible to get pregnant? I thought I read that somewhere, but when they remove your uterus, aren't they basically tieing off your ovaries the same as when you get your tubes tied?

Just to ease your mind about friday the 13th my son needed surgery and it was on 6/6/06 he was 4 years old i called and cancelled the nurse called me back and asked me why....and shamed me into keeping that date he needed it done I was extra nervous because of the date .....and he was just fine!!! Just wanted to point out how we needlessly torture ourselves and you are not alone in that area. You will be fine best wishes

Re: Will I still have PMS

Mine is on Friday 11/13 as well... we are LUCKY to be having it done on that day so we'll be all healed up before having to deal with Christmas!!

and no you can't get pregnant after having a hyst....there is no place for anything to go to make that happen.

good luck...I'll be thinking of you on our lucky day!
