Generally for open abdominal surgery, the
hospital stay is 3 to 5 days. What is your bowel surgery for? This may also affect your stay length.
Keep in mind that this is MAJOR SURGERY. You will need time to recover - think weeks and not days. You will need time off work - again think weeks and not days. You will also need help at home with cooking, cleaning, dishes, laundry, shopping, driving, etc. Here are

What I found most useful were:
Meals in the freezer that you can just pop in the microwave
Easy foods for breakfasts and lunches
Loose fitting clothes
Recovery corner with pillows and blankets
Small pillow to hold against your tummy for coughs and sneezes
Super clean your house and get your yard in shape for a long absence.
