Digestion troubles - getting discouraged

I've always had sensitive digestion/borderline IBS. Since my TAH on 7/10, I'm having lots more trouble. Started out constipated, took prunes and colace and it improved. Then it turned into diarrhea. When I cut back too much on prunes or colace, I get constipated again. My diet has been very bland and limited since the surgery and I could really cry. I'm afraid I'll never be able to go out to a restaurant with myfamily again! Will I spend the rest of my life eating rice, soup and diced up chicken?! Or does this get better eventually? If it weren't for this problem, I'd feel great. But this is really starting to worry me!

Hi (((tytania891)))

Have you spoken to your doctor about this issue? Perhaps they will have some solutions for you. They might be able to tell you if it is from the surgery itself, hormones, etc. I hope that you find some answers soon. Enjoying food is such a big part of our lives, isn't it? Take care!

Re: Digestion troubles - getting discouraged

I can relate. I know the surgery itself does a number on the digestive track, but I'm also blaming medication. Since surgery 3.5 weeks ago, I've been on -- among other things -- four antibiotics, iron tablets, and prescription strength ibuprofen. Any of those can cause stomach issues. I eliminated the ibuprofen first but didn't see a change. I think it came down to one of the antibiotics, which I finished last week. A few days after I finished it, the diarrhea improved. I'm still being really careful with what I eat though. Chicken soup seems to be the best bet.

That was a big problem for me too. It does seem to just get better. Once the medications & all are out of your system it helps. It did take about 4 months for me to be able to not worry as much about what I eat. Hang in there.

I still need to use gas-x some days but it is no way near as bad as it was. I don't know if 4 months is it for everyone but that is when it got better for me. Best wishes!
