Taking Premarin for a long time?

I searched Premarin and found this site. I had a total hysterectomy in 1985 and started taking 0.625 dosage of Premarin immediately after surgery. As both ovaries were removed I have been taking premarin daily for 26 years.

I am questioning this action due to the negative reports about the harmful effects that premarin may bring. On the other hand at the time of my surgery it seemed there wasn't any other choice and my life did continue on in a balanced fashion.

After reading the effects having no ovaries can have on the rest of my body and taking premarin for 26 years I am very hesitant about changing anything.

I'm now 62 years old and have experienced some clotting in my legs but whether this is premarin related is questionable.

If there is anyone that belongs to this forum and has been taking premarin for 20 or more years I would be interested to hear if you have suffered any consequence. Thanks!

Re: Taking Premarin for a long time?

Solidcomfort,

I'm in the trials and errors of HRT which started the beginning of this month. I returned back to the docs yesterday round 3 on HRT hopefully this next time will work started w/patch(allergic reaction), changed to cream (no luck had horrible rash) and now been given Premarin I start it tomorrow before bedtime should be interesting if it works. I see you have been on it for a while.

Re: Taking Premarin for a long time?

I can't speak from personal experience, but my Mom was on Premarin for about 20 years & did suffer from a blood clot & almost died. She was immediately taken off estrogen & was told she could never take it again, as it greatly increases your risk of clots. She suffered through the abrupt withdrawl, then changed over to compounded progesterone cream & black cohosh, & she managed to make it through the rest of her menopause relatively well.

Everyone is individual & there are risks with most all treatments, so it's really a personal choice. Good luck with your decision.

Re: Taking Premarin for a long time?

Thanks for the help.
I have high blood pressure and will keep an eye out on any changes for the next 3 wks. I'm hopeful this will help if not its back to the old drawing board.

Re: Taking Premarin for a long time?

i've been on premarin off and on since my hysterectomy. I always try other things, but inthe end, go back to premarin.

My mom has been on it over 20 years and has never had a problem. She's now down to the .3, she'll be 83 in a few days.

She's always been active and is extremely healthy for a woman her age.

Re: Taking Premarin for a long time?

My mom took it for over 30 years with no problems. She was never offered anything different. he quit it with great difficulty by weaning off, but now, at 71, she takes estradiol tablets 0.5mg.
