bowel prep

You all are the best. New question...My doctor said no on the bowel prep. But, after reading some of these posts, I am wondering, what can it hurt??? I mean like clear liquids day before surgery, mag citrate? Just wondering. I like the idea of a cleaned out intestinal area.

I would follow your doctor's instructions. Most people find the bowel prep unpleasant, so why do it if your doc says there's no need? I didn't do a bowel prep and did not have any problems.

IF YOUR DR DID NOT TELL YOU TO DO BOWEL PREP DON'T DO IT. Yes it can cause problems. It can cause dehydration, which can lead to shock. There was a lady here a couple of years ago who went into dehydration shock after surgery and almost died because she decided to do bowel prep although she wasn't instructed to. That may have been an extreme case, but it definitely emphasized the importance of following the directions your DR has given to you. PERIOD

And also don't go on a liquid diet unless you've been instructed to. You need the nutrients to help you when you are immediately post op.

Since your DR is the person who is responsible for your well being during surgery don't do anything in the days leading up to surgery that could affect you in surgery, without his express orders or ok. And once again, yes bowel prep and a liquid diet could affect you in surgery.
