asthma and anesthesia
tjoyce-
I've tried Advair twice and each time it makes my heart rate go up so bad that they take me off of it. It has Seravent in it and I have a bad reaction to it. I have a heart murmur so heart rate going up is not what they want. They keep trying it though. This past visit to my new asthma doc was a good one though. I have had a problem with my asthma since moving to Texas. They ruled out alergies which was good. They added another inhale which is called QVar and it works pretty good. And I now use a peak flow meter so I know what my breathing is doing each day. Since adding the new inhaler (and getting rid of the broncitus I didn't know I had in January) I've felt fairly good. Every once in a while I'll have a mild attack but I haven't had a decent attack since January and it was apparently caused by the broncitus I had. Right now the big concern is making sure I don't get sick before the surgery. If I do they will reschedule it which would stink. My son has a cold right now so I'm trying to keep him from breathing on me. Hopefully he doesn't decide to share his cold with mommy.

Kris, I sympathize with you, I haven't been able to take Advair (Serevent) either. But..I found something that works so well, I've just had an entire two months (this is like a year to me) without an asthma attack and it's cut down my breathing treatments on the machine. It's called Foradil Aerolyzer.
I wish you the best (I have no small children at home, but my 'restrictions' pre surg are to avoid the grandchildren, no crowds, no shopping unless the store is almost empty...so I don't get sick beforehand).

Pam.
I'll have to ask the doc about that. Its an inhaler?? I need to get in contact with him before the 21st or I'm in trouble...my singulair prescription has no more refills. OOPS. I was supposed to go see him in February but all the GYN stuff hit the fan in February so my asthma doc got put on the back burner so to speak.
Thanks for the input. I'll have to ask him about that med.

Kris, you can just do a search for that....and it's a little 'spinhaler' type thing, with a pill. (You'll 'get it' if you do a search, it'll show it). It's an am and pm thing for me, and it was developed for people who have asthma related to exercise too. Many bodybuilders/athletes are using it now for long control of the asthma.
Now, Spiriva is working great for folks who have emphysema, but I have genetic anaphylactic asthmatic allergies and it didn't do a thing for me, personally.
I have to use my actual machine for treatments several times a day. But I'm really relieved to know from others here that spinal anesthetic works really well, with none of the side effects from general anesthetic.
