Total Hystectomy with ovaries and cervix out
I like the tampon burning party idea - kind of like a mortgage burning ceremony, huh? I still need a tree topper for future Christmas trees, perhaps I should save one and get creative
Others can be very insensitive about this subject and the decisions all of us are facing (especially women who haven't had issues!). I'm just staying away from those who aren't supportive - I don't need it right now.
Here's to everybody making the right decision for themselves based on discussion with docs and research

Total Hystectomy with ovaries and cervix out
i wanted to keep my ovaries since i'm 38 and scared of HRT. i didn't care about my cervix and didn't know it was gone until i read the pathology/surgery report! (pain meds in the hospital interefere with my brain cells, lol)
my male doc (who is so kind i think i'm in love, lolol) told me that the right ovary was boggy and he would have been in there year later taking it out. he said i could function just fine on one ovary.
after you do your research and talk to your doc and you're happy with your decision, then relax! you've done your work and no one has the right to make you feel guilty about it.
good luck!

Total Hystectomy with ovaries and cervix out
Hi Renee,
Sounds like you have been through alot. I pray your surgery goes well and you have an uneventful recovery.
I have talked extensively with one of the surgeons about keeping or removing the ovaries and cervix. I think I will talk to the other surgeon at my pre op visit. I did a lot of reading, research, etc. I actually knew what I wanted to do even before I met the surgeon.
Since I'm already in my mid 40's, I would feel more comfortable having everything out. Menopause wouldn't be far behind even if I kept my ovaries and cervix. I discussed my fears with the dr. I only had two options anyway. A hysterectomy with or without the ovaries and cervix taken out. If I were younger, in my 30's, I would probably keep them. But, since I'm not, I believe the right decision for me is to have everything taken out now, while I'm young enough to recover better than if I was older. I am still debating the HRT issue. It all depends on how bad the hot flashes are afterwards. Actually I'm used to hot flashes anyway because I've had hot flashes ever since I started my period when I was 13. Lately I've been so cold, so I think my blood is low. I still have regular periods but I am always cold, even with the heat on in the house. Another thing I'll have to talk to my dr. about. My mom always had problems with her ovaries and cervix and had to have several operations. That is another factor why I want to have them out. She had nothing but trouble and lots of surgeries. I don't want to have to go through another surgery if possible. My sister had her hsyt when she was 26 due to severe endometroisis.
Believe me, I have thought this thing into the ground. And the decision that will make me feel most comfortable is to just have everything out now. I gave this more thought than you can possible know. Now it's just the surgery and the hospital I'm afraid of. But I think once the surgery is over and the waiting is over, things will be okay.
I'm very open to my drs. about everything. If something is bothering me I tell them. So I feel this is the best decision for me. I do get mad that there is even fibroids because if there weren't I wouldn't have to go through surgery. But I can't do anything about that.
I'm finally off the fence about what I want to do, and that alone brings me relief. I still continue to write down questions to ask my dr. next time I see her. But I feel like I'm finally at some peace.
My prayers are with you when you have your upcoming surgery. Please let me know how things turn out when you are up to it.
Robin

Total Hystectomy with ovaries and cervix out
Robin,
With everything that has been going on since I have know that I need the surgery, I found out that the two things that have helped me the most was talking to my friend "DC" who went through similiar surgery two years ago, she kept her ovaries because she was only 37 and now wishes they were taken out. Truely talking to someone that has expereinced what I am going through has been a blessing.
The second thing is strange for me. I have never been one to use a journal, but my 19 year old daughter gave me a journal at chirstmas time, and I write in it almost everyday. It seems that once I give the fear or worry a voice, I can let go of it (Until the next round). If you do not already have a journal I suggest getting one. Especially since you have a while til your surgery.
Best of luck to you, and stick to your decision. You know what is right for you!
Renee

Total Hystectomy with ovaries and cervix out
Renee,
Recently I have been talking to a good friend of mine that I haven't seen in a while. She had a hysterectomy about 13 years ago. She had everything out and of course I'm sure they have made improvements since then. I think she was in her mid 30's at the time and already had 2 kids. Her problem was the same as most of ours. Fibroids, constant bleeding, anemia. She decided to have everything out, including ovaries and cervix, and she has never regretted it. She did go on HRT and is still on it after all these years, but other than that, she only stayed in the hospital one night. As for HRT and me, I don't want to be on it that long, as they have found that it causes problems. But then again, I have been reading that there are some low dose ones now that produce lower estrogen that the ovaries would. So I feel right with my decision.
About the journal, that is a great idea!!! I know my sister writes in a journal every day and my aunt does also. I will buy one and do the same. It's good to get things off your chest. Until, like you said, something else comes up.
You know what I think makes me nervous as well, and I'm sure it does you also? Is all the kaos the world is in today. With the war and everything else that is going on, I don't even like to watch the news anymore. Most of it is bad and I want to think happy thoughts. Every day something bad happens and each channel has to repeat the same story about a dozen times. We live in strange times.
Thanks again for the tip abouto the journal. I'll get one today when I take my car out to get fixed.

Robin,
I am glad that you like the tip about the journal. It has been a god send for me! To think my child thought of it....
Focus on what you can change and then let the rest go. That has become my motto!

Total Hystectomy with ovaries and cervix out
Hi girls,
I am 43 and just had everything (uterus, tubes, cervix, ovaries) taken out on 12/26/06. I had a large uterine fibroid (had an ablasion 3 years ago) that the doctor wanted removed along with my uterus. I was also a little skeptical about removing my ovaries, but decided that I wanted to be free of worrying about my female organs everytime I was not feeling perfect. I am on the .05 vivelle dot patch and feel great. My moods are fine (yes, I still yell a little bit.......4 kids will do that to you!), but I feel empowered that I am "clean" inside and don't have to worry about all of the things that could happen. The decision is definitely a personal one that I found hard to make, but I am so happy now that I had my ovaries out..........hope this helps and good luck to you!

Renee,
I notice more and more people today are making journals. It sure is a good way to get things off your mind that you have nobody else to tell. You and your daughter sound like you are very close. That is so nice. So many kids today don't bother with their parents after a certain age, and it's sad.
One thing I have learned as I've gotten older and have had friends pass away and such, is to not dwell on the small things in life. I used to want things to be so perfect. Now I accept things as they are, and feel much better. It's too difficult being or trying to be perfect. The little things in life don't matter at all in the end. The other day my aunt noticed it for the first time. She said something about in the old days I would be much neater. I told her I am neat, but I'm not obsessive about it anymore. So something spills on the carpet or things need fixing that I can't get right to. So what? What's going to happen? Nothing. Instead of complaining about the carpet I just take a towel and pick up the spill. When things need fixing, the next time I have some free time I'll get to it. I figure if other people have a problem with it. that is their problem. Being healthy and having a happy life are the only things that really matter in this life.
