Deciding What type of Hysterectomy
Can I elect what type of hysterectomy I want to have or is that the doctor's decision?

Re: Deciding What type of Hysterectomy
My doctor just told me. I was hoping for LAH but when he saw how big my fibroids were he said,"Those aren't coming through a tube". I think it depends why you are having the surgery and where you live. I guess the end result is the same, just the recovery time will be different.

Re: Deciding What type of Hysterectomy
I was diagnosed with fibroids and suspected adenomyosis, with dibilitating periods, my Dr. gave me my options. I went home and did allot of research,(that's how I found this wonderful site ) after reading everything I could get my hands on, I when to my Dr. and told her that, I was hoping for an LSH but was ready for all possibilities. I was lucky she said I was a good candidate for an LSH. But she also gave me that warning that if there where any problems, something we didn't know was there, there is always the possibility that the procedure could change. I hope not but I realize that could happen. So I'm just crossing my fingers.

Re: Deciding What type of Hysterectomy
LAVH is generally a much easier and shorter recovery. Considered less invasive. I'm sure the doctor will do what is best with your particular circumstances before and during surgery. My doctor did LAVH with the understanding that if it couldnt be done that way she would have to go through the abdominal wall. good luck

Re: Deciding What type of Hysterectomy
I was expecting that I would have a small horizontal bikini line incision and that he would leave both my ovaries.
When I woke up I discovered a large vertical incision and was told that one ovary had to go because it was so covered in endo and my uterus was enlarged so it became evident that the larger incision was necessary.
After years of suffering with this, I honestly could care less what he had to do, I'm so happy it's all over with and really, my recovery has not been near as tough as I expected. From day 1 I was able to walk upright comfortably and even with an annoying cough I never felt like I was going to bust a stitch.

Re: Deciding What type of Hysterectomy
If you'd really rather one form of surgery over another you may have to find another surgeon. Surgeons may recommend one form for purely medical reasons but they may also do it because it is the form that they are most comfortable performing. Whatever procedure you decide to have you want a surgeon with plenty of experience with that particular procedure.

Re: Deciding What type of Hysterectomy
Ultimately, it's up to the Dr, but a good one will tell you of your options & the pros & cons of each one. Mine went down the list of options & the only one that was workable for me was TAH. He did a bikini cut & I've had an awesome recovery.

Re: Deciding What type of Hysterectomy
I went in to the consultation with the surgeon knowing I wanted a LSH due to the research I did ahead of time. She agreed to the LSH but also warned me that should things not work out that way, I could end up with a TLH or TAH, there were no guarantees. It all depended on what she found once she saw inside there.
I woke up with a LSH and couldn't have been happier.
Find someone who will discuss all the options available to you, pros and cons, etc. Some conditions rule out certain types of surgery.
