Re: hysterectomy 12-11-13
Hi shawnyboo to HysterSisters!
I am sorry you have to have a hysterectomy, but glad you found this site.
Your nerves, fears, and emotional is all very normal. This is one tough surgery to face and process.
For starters, as I am sure you know, this is MAJOR SURGERY. No matter how they enter your tummy, you will have lots of internal healing to do. You will need to take time off work. How long depends on your surgery type, how fast you heal, your job type and demands, and a myriad of other unpredictable factors. You will also need help at home post-op with cooking, cleaning, dishes, laundry, shopping, driving, etc.
You will want to buy loose fitting clothes. I spent 12 weeks in sweats and old shorts.
You may want to review our pre-op page to get some more information, as well as our post-op page.
Always know that we are here to help and support you. Ask any specific questions you have and we will try to answer them.

Re: hysterectomy 12-11-13
Your mind is probably going to play games on you up until the surgery but that is normal. Just remember it will all be worth it in the long run ...better than the alternative if you don't have it done.
You will want to have as much housework done as possible, shopping and I cooked and froze alot of meals so that the post-op time for me and my husband was easy.
As far as the hospital stay, my hospital provided a large sipping cup but you may want to take one with you as you will be very thirsty. They also provided footies but I had some with me just in case. Also, take a backscratcher..of all things. It really helped in so many ways..not just scratching but it was like an extra arm to reach for things.
As for me, I did so much sleeping. But took full advantage of it. You will have pain but that is what the pain meds are for..don't be afraid to take them. The pain medication dosage was too strong for me so they cut back on the dosage and I was fine afterwards. Don't be afraid to let the hospital staff know of any of your concerns.
When the doctor tells you to start walking...walk!!! You will see that the pains you will be dealing with are actually gas pains. So walking will help with the gas pains and help your recuperation time go quicker. You may not feel like walking but it will help in the long run.
A couple of weeks, you will deal with swelly belly (as this site so lovingly calls it). Your tummy will be swelling a bit especially by the end of the day. This is just a natural part of the recovery. I didn't use any binders but that is an individual decision.
As for when I was home, my husband bought me a tv table tray so that I didn't have to sit at the dinner table. That helped immensely.
Just listen to your body. You will know what to do. After a few weeks, I started to walk around my neighborhood. A couple of blocks at a time. I am lucky that I live in So. Florida so the weather cooperates. I am now at 5-6 miles on the weekends. During the workweek, I walk at lunchtime with my friends. They have been so supportive that way.
Of course, come here as often as you can as it is so nice to share suggestions/concerns with other women who have experienced the same thing.
Have a great holiday!

Re: hysterectomy 12-11-13
I agree that you will have to take it easy. Some things just have to wait.
Just over two weeks post-op I decided I should be strong enough to do something in my home that I had previously asked help for..
Well, my tummy was so sore afterwards and I had a slight pulling in my vagina when involved in the activity. Afterwards I was hobbling round the house, my tummy was sore. Took two painkillers and sat in front of the computer for quite a while.
I am so glad to be on this side of the op, and I think to myself did I really do it, did I brave it, did I go through it
wow, quite amazing. Seems like it was a longer time away than two weeks.
Thinking of you dear one.
Let us know how it goes.

Re: hysterectomy 12-11-13
Hey, 12-11-13 sister! I'm 42 and every day I have the roller coaster of emotions. The last two nights my dreams have involved my surgery even into the OR. They were both positive experiences, so I think it is my spirit reassuring me. It will be okay. I think there are signs all around us that help us, and we just need to look for them.
Best wishes for our 12-11-13 dates! I hope it's a good one for us!

Re: hysterectomy 12-11-13
I had an LAVH and vaginal repair. Stayed one night.
My first week was the worst in terms of pain. Then eased up considerably..only got sore when I carried something I shouldn't have.
I am just over two weeks post op. My swelly belly seems to go into the room before I do. It is large for me. Gets bigger at night. Not so big in the morning. I have one a-line dress that is quite flattering...if I can put it that way. Another looseish dress, and a pair of loose at the waist tracksuit pants I borrowed from my sister.... Gee, didn't realize till now that I have only been wearing these three outfits.. Oh and a big tent boob tube dress with a tshirt underneath. Loose pj bottoms with a big loose top over. Have little short pjs too that go comfortably right over my belly.
Have I been eating too much? Is that why it looks so big? Thought its big anyway, may as well only diet after six weeks.
Hope I helped a bit.feeling a bit down tonight.

Re: hysterectomy 12-11-13
Your body is just reacting to the surgery. There was alot done there so it will take time to heal. It is just a lot of scar tissue built up. I am more than 9 weeks post op and still dealing with swelly belly. It is always bigger at night due to the strain.
As for myself, I figured no time like the present to start eating right again and I am walking as much as possible. I walk during my lunch hour at work..I have fantastic friends at work who are very supportive of my recovery and are walking with me. I live near the beach so on the weekends I walk on the beach.
The swelly belly isn't as big as it was at first but still dealing with it. Yes, at times it is annoying but I know it is a part of the healing process. I am just so glad that I am healthier now than I think I have been in a long time!!!
