New Here-One week post op--need help
Below is my very first post that I posted under new introductions.
"Hi! I'm so grateful that I found this site this morning. I'm 33 years old, and I had a TAH with BSO last Tuesday, January 25th. I also had a prophylatic mastectomy at this time as well. I was originally diagnosed with breast cancer in May-04. I had a c-section (my baby is doing great) and modified radical mastectomy with snb. I'm stage 2b. I finished chemo in Sept-04, and completed radiation right at the beginning of December. This past summer, after breast cancer diagnosis, I found out that I was brca2 positive. This is why I had the hysterectomy. Also, my tumor was er/pr +, so it will help me in that aspect as well. I was released from the hospital on Saturday. I had to come home with a folley catheter, because I could not void on my own. Tomorrow I go back to my gynecology oncologist for my first post-op visit and removal of the catheter. Do you have any helpful tips for going potty on your own? I'm really worried that I will have to start self-cathing. I know the best thing to do is relax, but I can't seem, too. I have an 8 month old and a 4 year old, and I want to heal for them as well as for me. I still have a jp drain in my lower abdomen as well. It is still putting out about 50cc's each day. Does the doctor normally take this out at this first visit? I also still have two jp drains in my chest, but they are hardly draining anymore. I hope these can come out tomorrow as well. Also, I have about a two inch opening in the incision that keeps bleeding. I called my doctor's office, and they said that I should take it easier than I have been. I'm just worried that it will get infected. I'm sorry for the long post. I am so thankful that I found this website this morning, and I'm proud to be a new hystersister.
Thanks again for your help."

New Here-One week post op--need help
Hi Denise,
Hugs to you from this side! I wish you total recovery!!!
I truely wish I could give you all types of advise. I can only tell you about mine.
After the folley comes out, you will begin to go by yourself, I had some pressure to let me know it was time. My insides still do not want to wake up.
As far as the jp drains, I had two in the pelvic region. My DR would not remove them until the out put (per drain) was below 30ml in a 24 hour period. I just had my last one removed yesterday. Removing them can be painful, they don't always tell you that, they didn't me. Afterwards, I am a little stiff, walking does help. BUT you will not be 100%, that will take time.
Don't expect to be normal after they remove the drains, you are still healing! Please listen to your doctor and try to take it as easy as you can. With little ones, that is difficult I know.
Feel free to contact me anytime. I am housebound until the end of Feb. I am not even allowed to drive. Good luck. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Anne

New Here-One week post op--need help
Dear Denise,
Welcome home and to post op. Bless your heart, you have been through it haven't you? You sound like you are in good spirits, which will get you through a lot.
I had a bladder sling done and had to do the self cathing for a while. It wasn't bad at all. I was upset when I first learned I would have to do it, but later realized it was for no reason. So, if you have to, please don't worry about it- it is easy.
I found for several weeks I had to really concentrate to start the flow and also to make sure I was completely voiding. It seemed so weird to have to think so hard about going to the bathroom.
You are right, the key is relaxing, but I think it is also that everything is swollen and it just feels different for a while. In time it got easier and now I don't have to think about it at all. Everything is working great!
I know you want to be healed for your little ones, but please remember this isn't something you can will to be so. It is a process of time and you are going to have to let yourself rest and heal- as long as that may take. I think feeling anxious will hinder you in a lot of ways. It may make relaxing to urinate harder.
I hope you have help. If not you need to look for some. You can't be lifting your little one or doing much of anything for a while. Follow your drs instructions and you should do fine. If you have questions don't hesitate to call him/her.
Let us know how you are doing.
's, Rita
