Nervous and a little confused
I am scheduled for surgery on 7/28/03. I have a history of very heavy & very painful periods. I have tried just about everything over the last 10 years, I've had a D&C, took birthcontrol pills, got the depo provera shot, and now getting lupron depot injections to stop the periods completely. I have several small fibroids. I am confused on whether to keep my cervix or not and also my doctor doesn't want to take the whole uterus, just part of it and keep everything else. I do want to keep my ovaries if they are in good shape. I am just unsure of whether I want the doctor to just take the part of the uterus with the fibroids. Suggestions anyone?

((((((((((((Frances)))))))))))),
Since the cervix is part of the uterus, could he mean a partial hyst, that leaves the cervix? I am not familiar with taking the cervix and leaving part of the uterus. I am not sure how they would do that. Any info on how that is done would be appreciated.

the doctor is suggesting a partial hyst; he wants to only take a portion of the uterus; leaving everything else for support purposes. My concern is whether or not I want a partial hyst. Can you take the whole uterus and leave everything else?

(((((Fran)))))))),
You can take the uterus leaving the cervix that is called a partial hyst. It is called a partial because the cervix is actually part of the uterus.
If you take the whole uterus including the cervix that is a total hyst.
If you take either or both tubes and ovaries that would add either rso(right) lso(left) or bso (both)
so if you take just the uterus it would be a sah (supracervical abdominal hyst)
If you leave the cervix you must have abdominal removal.
Hope this helps,
