Week 5 after hysterectomy ... Intercourse questions?

hi my name is Amanda.... I am five weeks out of my lavh (uterus and cervix) due to cervical cancer.... Have just now today started getting super weepy and have been reading about post op sex (after the eight weeks is up) and I am reading a lot of stories about women losing the ability to orgasm.... And this is throwing my weepiness into panic.... I've been married to my husband for 1.5 years and with him for three (he is fairly large) and sex before him felt great, but I'm guessing at the time we got together is when the cancer started causing problems (pain during sex)... He is the only guy I've ever been with that could give me uterine orgasm..... So, I guess my question being that my uterus is obviously gone.... What does this mean for our sex life? I am 36 and he is forty.... I am just feeling a little less than sexy/desirable at the moment.... Any kind words of inspiration would be helpful

Re: Week 5 after.... Intercourse questions?

I can only speak for myself, but sex has still been good. There was a short time when my body needed to "regroup" and figure out its new anatomy, but after that, it's all been good. It's true experiences vary, but hysterectomy is not an automatic spoiler. I think it helped that i waited 8 weeks and felt fully healed, no soreness or swelling, and I didn't get discouraged the first few times. Give your body a chance, and be patient. I hope it all goes well for you.

Thank you for the kind words... I mean I know marriage is not all about sex... And idk y now, all of a sudden I am getting so emotional.... I've not stopped crying for two days straight now... I just feel a huge sense of loss idk what is normal as far as depression goes (gyno said there was a chance after surgery), but just feeling outta it the past two days... Thank you again.

True, marriage is not all about sex, but it's an important part. I was terrified of losing it after reading some of the posts on these boards. My husband and I have a very healthy sex life. I am happy to report that sex is just as good as it was before. True, you no longer have uterine contractions, but you also don't have the cramping after sex, sore breasts, pms, periods, etc.

Re: Week 5 after hysterectomy ... Intercourse questions?

I am 2 month post surgery and my husband and I just resumed sex last weekend, it didn't go great, it really hurt, but I am able to orgasm. I use to have uterine orgasms as well and was afraid I would miss those, but I must say the intensity I expereinced was a great replacement for the uterine feeling. Be patient and know it won't be back to normal right away. We are still being very careful and it still hurts a little, kind of like starting all over in the intimacy area with someone I've been with for 28 years.

You have a long way to go in the healing department, your body is working hard to heal and process the emotions that go along with diagnosis and treatments. Very possible things might be even better than before once you have had the opportunity to heal. Try not to worry about the what if scenarios and concentrate on the good things.

I'm in the same boat as you and have been going round and round with myself about WHY I'm so sad/emotional and worrying if there is something terribly wrong with me. And feeling tremendous loss and worry that I made a mistake. I had my LAVH a week after your surgery. It's so hard. It's also really helpful to hear others going through things the same way. Truly.

Re: Week 5 after hysterectomy ... Intercourse questions?

I had an LAVH on May 18th and am feeling great. My husband and I have had no problems resuming sexual intercourse...in fact, because I am no longer in constant pain, bleeding, or exhausted our sex life has gotten better. I am able to orgasm and often it's more intense. I too was worried after reading horror stories. The only suggestion I have is to do a bit more foreplay or use lubrication. It did take a little longer for my body to get super ready...however, there are now many days a week that I can't wait for the kids to go to bed. Just take it slow and trust your body, don't get discouraged!
